ORIGINAL Paint 24087 Enamel Green
And I mean original! Here's my barn find of the day. Five gallons of 1962 24087 enamel paint. And yes it's still good! Just going to take a LOT of stirring. I know this probably interest multiple M-series vehicle owners. But as I own an M-151A1 I posted it here. So the MUTT folks get to see it first. The can has been opened before and the rubber was failing. So the top layer had hardened over. I peeled that back and found the paint as you see it. I closed it back up and taped up the lid to can joint with a roll of electrical tape for the time being.

Matt.....
What a great find ! As you probably know, arguments are still raging over "what is the correct shade of SG-OD" with all the changes in the Federal Standard 595 catalog.
Stir it well (REALLY well) and then make some cardboard color-chip cards, about 6" by 4". I'll buy one !

Great find!!
Actually that is X-24087. Standard color used from 1958/59 through 1968.
Try using Naphtha as a reducer when spraying.
Congratulations. Paul

Re: ORIGINAL Paint 24087 Enamel Green
Nice find! There's nothing like the original GI Issue OD Color .
Also have a some 1960's GI Issue 24087 Rust inhibiting OD that I have used on my M-38A1 since 1975. The GI Issue has Red Oxide Primer as an ingrediant. There is no ocomparison between the original GIIssue and some of the aftermarkets. Mine is 1963 dated by Atlas and I have used it to refinish my M-38A1 three or four times.
The difference in GI issue and the brands available to the collectors is noticeable, not many on this forum where around to see fresh 24087 come out of support unit shops. Will post pics when I get a chance.

Re: ORIGINAL Paint 24087 Enamel Green
Paul,
Good catch. I'll be sure to label anything related to this as X24087. From what I read there *should* be no difference. But I don't want to mislead anyone.
Ken,
Great idea. I'll make up a bunch of color chips when I properly stir this up and decant into new 1 gallon and 1 quart cans for storage.
Ben,
You've convinced me to hang onto this and paint mine with it when the day comes.

Re: ORIGINAL Paint 24087 Enamel Green
There were several different "colors" of 24087 throughout the years it was in use. It is documented somewhere, I just need to remember where. The military changed the specs several times.

Re: ORIGINAL Paint 24087 Enamel Green
I think it was on Steel Soldiers I found a long thread about that. Seems the changes mostly occurred after the Vietnam timeframe. I believe even now there is by the numbers a 24087 paint as a federal color but it's not at all the same as the early 60's version. This particular paint being 1962 and my M151a1 being 1967 I believe this will work well for me.

Re: ORIGINAL Paint 24087 Enamel Green
2 years on and an update. I spent 2 hours (with breaks) stirring the paint. Even though I was using a 1/2" drive drill I had to let the motor cool once in a while. Should have color chip cards in a couple of weeks.

Re: ORIGINAL Paint 24087 Enamel Green
Wow... I can hardly believe it is two years ago.... I had to look twice at the original post date !
That's great news Matt. Let us know when the chip cards are available. And keep stirring........ make sure the heavy stuff at the bottom of the can gets scooped upwards and blended in fully.

Re: ORIGINAL Paint 24087 Enamel Green
I have a stash of GI issue 1963 dated 24087 Rust Inhibiting Semi Gloss OD manufactured by ATLAS Paint, it still shakes right up with no lumps. I used it to paint the new M-38A1 I built in 1975 and use it every 10-12 years or so to keep it looking new.
Not every brand of GI 24087 will last in the can as long as ATLAS.
The factory 24087 finish on new M-151's during the 60's appeared to be more glossy than other new M-Series trucks of that were 24087. Same goes for some of the M-416's.
GI Issue 24087 had Red Oxide Primer in it.

Re: ORIGINAL Paint 24087 Enamel Green
The gunk on the bottom is the dulling agent and if you don't get it all stirred in very well you will have a high gloss OD paint job. Think Presidential vehicle.

Oh yes there was a LOT of stirring to recover that gunk at the bottom.

Re: ORIGINAL Paint 24087 Enamel Green
Finally!!
I finally got around to doing this.
4x6 pieces of 18 gauge steel primed with Midwest Military/TM9 primer and two coats of the above paint thinned about 50% with Xylene. I'll have all the details on a label on the back. How's $5 a piece sound? I"ll have these at the convention next week.
