Re: M151A1 begining of new project
well it didn't work. I'm trying to grease the fitting from the transfer output yoke and the rear diff input yoke its the same shaft. That's a real tight fit. Looks like you have the fitting rotated to the top in order to get the good angle.
My Top: Another topic my top is taking a beating from the sun and has faded. Has anyone stained or die there canvas top? Any ideas of a chemicals mix or brand? I ordered a die from amazon don't know how that would turn out. Ill post and update.

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
As far as the top goes contact Dave Pizziferatto on here. He makes and sells canvas tops so he will know exactly what to use on them. Canvak is the first thing that comes to mind.
On the shaft it is pretty much a straight line so top or bottom is going to be the same angle. If using the pointed tip fitting you should not not be having any problems. I have never had any issues greasing mine with that fitting no matter where it was pointed. The only thing I can think of is maybe the fitting is pointed towards the differentials? If it is then the u-joints were installed backwards. The only way to fix that is to press them out and back in the right way.

Did you push the ball in on the fitting with the tip of the gun fitting? You need to depress the ball and hold that tip in the hole.

If you figure something on the dye, let us know, I have a side curtain that I need to dye, I want to brush on with foam brush, read it could be done with Rit dye. I'm going to buy dark green and dark brown and mix it to liking, can't do the submersion method because it has a red cross on it.

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
I was able to dye my top it took a few tries with soaking then spraying which turns out with the best results.
Here is the start picture of my top. you can see its really faded sort of almost white green.
At first when I started I used green only and the soaking technique as the instructions said. using Rit dye.
The problem with soaking unless you have a large pool it did not give me the best results. It created small dark dye lines and was not enough green. This was a mix of one bottle with a gallon or more warm water and salt.
I decided to add more bottles of just green. I thought I took a picture of the just green results but I could find that picture. So then I got some brown dye. Mixing in green and brown which did not look good it turned more black than anything else. So I threw that out. So I started to mix brown and add green in as I started to tinting it and test with a white sock to get a closer olive drab color. The mixing stick and sock looked pretty good so I got a garden sprayer from Lowes which was a good idea.
This took a few tries with green only which turned out to green then like I said I restarted with brown then adding green letting it soak an hour then applied three times and then washed off with a water hose.
Here is the finished color
So If I would have never crammed it into the small bucket I would have never gotten those small lines and I think would have ended up with a even dye rather than having those small dark lines. What can I do but live with it. Give it time I'm sure the sun will start to fade it and now I have an idea how to do it. I thought to pass along my experiences.

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
In that before picture that was not a faded top, it was a desert tan top. I am really curious to see how well the top held up as far as still being waterproof and rot proof. You definitely get an A for effort but I think in the long run you will wish you had just bought a new top in the correct color. JMHO.

That is a good point there about desert tan I never look at it like that. needing a mutt waterproof “lol” come on Rick you now better than that. It should be good for what I do with my mutt and it’s sits under my car port always but this Texas heat is tough on canvas, and I do crazy things but drive my mutt in the rain oh hell no. thanks for checking it out. Let’s see how long the dye last.

Yea, waterproof was definitely the wrong way to put it. On mine when it rains more water comes in under the windshield than is coming down on the roof. VERY wet feet!

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
It looks good, Dave P(weebee webbing) suggested I use Canvak in the dyeing process as it would have better penetration, I will be trying the process in the next few weeks. Going to use the spray on process as you did, will post results when finished.

Yes definitely spraying is the best even results. Start your mix with brown and slowly add green to the mix. Best of luck. Oh don’t forget to use an old white sock and cut strips and dip periodically testing the color. I didn’t have any penetration issues when spraying the dye onto my canvas.

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
I'm getting ready to make some bumper stencils can someone tell me the name of the fonts used on 1966 Mutt. I once purchased through Rick Larsen but I see he is not open. My wife has a Cricut machine and I have made stencils for my HMMWV using it but what wanted to get the correct font style used on a 1966 MUTT? or at lease close to it. I know us motorpool folks would just use anything, just thought to ask.
Im not sure these are correct:
I never caught the hood stencils are different.
