If it was running good before you ran the fuel out then I doubt timing is the issue. Does it have electronic ignition? If it does then once the timing is set it does not move. As far as seeing the mark, you need to clean off the pulley and find the notch and mark it with chalk of with paint. Then you will be able to see it. Other than that there is really no other way to set the timing.

You might need an adapter to run the timing light.
The military made a set of adapters to work on the waterproof ignition systems, one for dwell measurement is insulated and screws down the hole atop the distributor (currently covered by a cap nut)
timing light screwed into the #1 plug wire (from memory) then onto the plug
A -20 TM will cover the diagnosis and how the tools are set up, there's nothing you cannot fabricate to make a non-mil timing light work on the system, but remember to hook it up to the grounded battery or you will run 24V through it and let the smoke out...

I need to figure that out about the timing. I just thought about something, would low oil in the filter housing cause the idle jumping? I need to check that.
I also just picked up some parts from Guy (CMD Body Panels) last week. It's the two rear fender tops, side panel to replace some rust spots created when they pieced the MUTT together that over the years was just covered up with bondo that has started to really bubble and rust. Purchased also the two rear a-frame support brackets underneath. So I hope to get to putting them on in the fall. I've been busy on my HMMWV electric turret motor upgrade. Need to give the old MUTT some attention.

Ok I been having a loping/erratic idle issue and thought to look inside my distributor to see if I had a weight issue as Rick mentioned. Load and behold it looked like a mess:
What the hell is all this crud and goop all over the weights, in the housing and on the coil.
So I cleaned it up and had to disassemble everything. I took this picture but forgot to take the after when I installed some heat shrink.
I noticed after I installed the springs and weights on the trigger wheel and shaft one of the springs was kind of stretched and had no recoil. I think that is my issue causing the loping?
After reinstalling and started up it idles better but still a little loping. I think I need to replace the springs. Does anyone have any?

I hope you did not get any of that stuff on your bare skin!!! That is some really nasty stuff. Dioxin oils from the coil. That coil will be toast. And is that wire going to a resistor in the bottom of the cavity for the coil? That was not a remote resistor coil so someone had a mismatch in there. Only the very early coils had the remote resistor under them. The goo on the weights is usually from the potting material melting out of the Prestolite electronic ignition modules. That is not hazardous that I know of but the stuff in the coils is real bad news. Set that coil on a paper towel and see if anything weeps out of it, If it is coming out of there do not use it.
And oil level in the air cleaner will not affect the idle unless the fuel pump went bad and the air cleaner is full of gasoline.

oh really it started back up with no issue. Is the coil still bad? The air cleaner is the proper level of oil and no fuel. This is a A1 configuration the pump is in the fuel tank. The wire in the housing is coming off the supply lead from the wire harness. The springs on the weights one seems to be at a good tension the other is loose. Would that make the idle loping?
What was odd was the trigger wheel was secured with a snap ring on the shaft rather than a screw. The trigger wheel looked like it was fabricated or repaired.

On my other computer now and I can see the wire coming in from the inlet cap. Yes, it will start with a coil dry of oil, Will eventually burn up the coil since the oil is the coolant. One light spring and one heavy spring is the correct setup and one is normally loose, yes. I usually put a dab of white grease on all the moving parts in there, prevents rust and keep things moving.

So what do you think is causing the loping? Is it possible the coil is going out causing the loping?

Well just wanted to post a simple modification for daily driving. I never liked the look of having one reflector from the rear. Having a license plate I still didn't like the look of the reflector in the spare tire area. So without getting away from the original mil/spec look I made a angle bracket without haing to remove the BO marker for daily driving and can be easily taken off for shows or what ever.
