Re: M151A1 begining of new project
yes its a knock off building in the neighborhood. The real building would have to many tourist standing around.
Check this out the other day I been wanting to fix my bumper numbers from pealing because of the old layers of paint.
I began to sand them down and discovered old markings on the original paint. I'm thinking they are original because the person I bought this from over 13 years had it in there family for about 25 years. It comes out right thinking they bought it from DRMO in the 80s and there is no old paint but the camouflage. The markings are 82 AB 1-17 CAV, HQ-3
I did a few repairs and removed them to keep as wall displays and replaced with NOS. So will decide to either replace the older numbers or keep my current Hell on Wheels numbers from Desert Storm.
These are quick repairs until I finally decide to tear all down and replace a few panels that I been buying from Guy.
What yall think about which bumpers numbers should I use?

Really awesome project Robert!
Could you elaborate on the license plate bracket you made? Any photos or measurements?
Thanks!

Hello Robert,
What a great restoration thread !!
She looks great !
It looks like you found an actual 82nd AB jeep
Maybe you could find pics of it in some photo database of the 82nd ?
If the jeep was with them originally, it would be cool to keep the markings, and maybe a pic of the original markings with the jeep as well.
But also using markings of your unit is a winner too !
Keep us posted !!
Guy makes great panels that can really save many more of these jeeps !!
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
Sure,
Basically here is a picture from the top: In this picture I installed/welded a 3" hinge on to the spare tire bracket in order to tilt it to remove the mounting bolt with a standard spring for adding tension. I pulled power with installing a three way plug from the tail lamp using waterproof plug. The stop is from a standard angle bracket from Lowes that is cut to fit. Also using a standard off the shelf license bracket with a back plate welded onto the hinge. The light is a standard license plate light with 24v bulb.
Here is a side angle. In this picture you can see a 90 degree bracket welded onto the hinge. The bracket that is between the license plate bracket came from an old bracket I cut up. I basically just used scraps around my garage. The thing here was trial and error. I had a smaller hinge completely welded when the hinge broke it was a pain to cut loose so I screwed on the hinge rather weld this time. But used a 3" door hinge that was laying around.

I actually bought a few body panels from Guy, (lower body side panel, both rear fender tops, and under body frames) about 9 months ago I'm just trying to put it on my schedule, to start back on the MUTT. I've been spending lots of time on my HMMWV upgrades (4L80E, 242, both front and rear diffs, installing rear winch) and just last week finally finished. You can see my tread in the HMMWV section. Its summer in Texas and the temperature are getting into the 100's so I have to limit work hours outside. But I do plan on doing this serious metal work to my MUTT. If fact comparing both the MUTT is actually more fun to drive than the HMMWV. Thanks for looking at my thread.

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
Hello Robert,
Keep up your great work, I will check out your other post .
Here is Florida it is pretty hot, and humid this summer.
We also get rain every day starting early in the morning.
I have been restoring a 1943 Ford GPW jeep, and it has been hot.
I am now repairing the frame, but doing so just inside my jeep barn.
I normally like to do all the welding outside, but the heat is too much !
I am also working on my 1953 M38A1 as well at the same time.
Several Dodges and a CCKW are on my expanding project list.
But I do also have an M151 that needs a restoration someday.
I can hardly wait for some colder weather, and the month of winter we have !!
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
Thanks for searching through my link. I've been spending to much time on my HMMWV. So today I did a little PMCS today. Ran into a small obstacle. on the grease fittings. ok, question does the tool set have a long nose grease fitting that is narrow enough to get into the tight U-Joints. I was greasing fittings today and there are a few that I'm having a hard time getting the fitting into place. I even jacked up the suspension in order to turn into a good angle. I'm thinking there has to be a long nose skinny fitting. Any ideas?

Same tool since WWII, it adapts the grease gun for tight spots.
Just one source I looked up, $18 at Home Depot.

Re: M151A1 begining of new project
Thanks let me check one out. The problem is the head is very tight to slip in. I'm using a flex hose. Which gives me many angles to reach the fittings. I was thinking of grinding down the head of the tip to become narrower. I'm going to check it out tomorrow.
