You said that so I was looking and I don't believe what I found! A picture of a carburetor with the filter screwed into the carb with no fitting! Right int he TM!! TM9-218-2320-20 1971. Page 2-105, figure 2-82. Unbelievable.

Here is a link to the manual if you do not have one.

Hell on wheels, here is the early -20 manual for a straight 151, Scroll through the engine section and take note of the line routing.

This looks like the correct picture

Remember, that is a straight 151 and that is a Holley carburetor. I think most of the pictures I saw in there showed the lines in front of the bracket. And yes, that is the one without the special fitting for the carburetor that you should always have!

And how did you copy and post that picture? I could not get a copy of the picture.

There are a few ways PDF to Office to BMP or Jpeg, but the easiest is iPhone to photos to photobucket then the usual steps.

I have an original set of TMs for the M 151 first variety, and they were typed on a typewriter. I am trying to remember about that fuel filter. I am thinking there was a reducer fitting that the filter had to go into. I might be dreaming. I was out of town yesterday but today I will go look at all my take out engines and see what the tubing looks like, as well as the fittings. These engines are "power pack" takouts so everything is there on them. I will see if I find anything useful and post some pics. I used to have more memory than IBM, but at my age, it is getting harder and harder to find my car keys.

There is supposed to be a 90 degree fitting on the 151 and A1 and a 30 degree fitting on the A2. These fittings are the same thread count as the 1/8 inch pipe but it is a straight thread, as is the carburetor. There is a plastic sealing washer and nut on the straight threaded section that goes into the carb and is locked by the locknut and plastic sealing washer, the other side of that fitting has the 1/8" pipe thread for the filter.

That is what I thought I remembered. One or the other fittings you described should be there for the metal fuel filter to screw into..and not directly into the carb body. I have a couple of Holley bodys and the kits, but I have never tried one of them. The complexity of them make the Zenith look like Lego in comparison, and those who run them say they are smoooooth.

I have them both and I run the Zenith. The Holley runs no better than a well set up Zenith in my opinion. For years I outran every other 151 that tried at Aberdeen from the beer store at the bottom of the hill all the way up the hill to the road into the rally. The closest one to me was Bob Amon and I am the one who built his carb.

HAHAHAHAHA....THAT ABERDEEN RALLY WAS THE BEST. I STILL HAVE THAT BROWN EAST COAST RALLY T SHIRT AND WEAR IT

YOU HEAR ANYTHING FROM AMON AT ALL? I CAN REBUILT THE ZENITHS MYSELF AS WELL. WITH AS MANY AS I HAVE HAD, I HAD BETTER BE ABLE TO. I USED TO BUY THOSE CARBS NEW FOR 85 BUCKS. ALL DAY LONG AND AS MANY AS I WANTED. BOY THOSE DAYS ARE LONG GONE. I STARTED FOOLING WITH THESE THINGS IN THE EARLY 1980'S. FIRST ONE I BOUGHT WAS FROM HARRY MONROE IN BIRMINGHAM. I HAVE BOUGHT, RESTORED, AND SOLD 19 OF THEM SINCE. I STILL HAVE 8 UNCUTS PLUS ONE HALF-CUT POS.
ZENITHS WILL NOT TOLERATE ONE SPECK OF MATTER CONTAMINATION IN THE FUEL, AND IF THEY ARE TO BE RESTORED THE CHAMBERS AND CHANNELS HAVE TO BE ABSOLUTELY CLEAR OF CONTAMINANTS.

That they do, you always have to run a second, modern filter but once they are clean they do run quite well. The one I am running now and have been for the last four or five years is one of the off shore ones from the last contract. You know, the ones that everybody said to avoid? Well I bought 4 of them when they were cheap since nobody wanted them and it is probably the best one I have had. I don't know if you remember Rainman from the forums but he got his A2 up to 72 MPH towing a 416 trailer and has a photo of it on his GPS (While driving with one hand taking picture with other!!!!!) I have not heard from Bob since Sandy hit the shore, his two houses made it through miraculously considering they were right on the beach. I talked to him a couple days after and have not heard from him since. I know he bought a house in Florida in addition to the ones up here, I do not know if he is staying there in the winter or not. I guess I really should try calling him someday.

Speaking of filter I once seen one that is inline fuel bowl filter, I liked the look old style that works any suggestions or ideas from the group?

Second question: what is the best way to remove the rear fender tops from the spot welds? Drill bit! That is my next task.

Robert, can't help on the filter, sounds like a marine or industrial type.
Check here for Guy Loomis' tear down and rebuild of his 151. He can also sully all the panels you will need. You will have to look through the pages but somewhere in the beginning there is a discussion on spot weld cutters.

Drilling out spot welds. Eastwood makes a spot weld removal bits for doing just that. Google "The Eastwood Company"
