Re: My evolution of my M998
has anyone ever changed the light color/bulb of the speed odometer for this version? All my displays are green LED's it would be nice to get them to all match. I have never opened one.

Re: My evolution of my M998
On Monday I finally had a chance to fire a real M2/50Cal off my HMMWV what a great day to actually fire one off my pride and joy. I fired plenty while on active duty and while in training and deployed I always wanted to fire off my own vehicle. I finally had a change at DriveTanks out of Uvalde, TX allowed me mount there M2 then to drive on the range and fire some rounds. It was a blast. Here is the video link to check it out: https://youtu.be/LLHOJW10D1M
My Rambo moment holding the MG42
Also had to option to fire a M2 off an M4
Fire a MG42
DriveTanks is a spectacular place to visit. You can select to fire any type of weapon system from driving tanks to firing every type of machine gun. As well fire off your vehicle. They also have a full display of weapons you can actually pick up and take pictures and fire. A good size museum that you can actual drive or fire. I have visited museums in Europe and in the states that only allow you to look and not touch, some prevent taking pictures, not this place you can actually hold or choose to fire theses weapons, this is among the best I every have visited. The best part its only a 2 hour drive from my front door. I plan on visiting more often to fire weapons.

Re: My evolution of my M998
After getting back from the range I needed to do some work on my HMMWV having a few days off. I finally going to get around to replacing my front springs and shocks. I have been wanting to do this for a while just never had the time. I plan to also add 1" lift spacers for the front and rear. Here is the before:
The front was sitting at 37" and the rear at 40"
Tearing it up.
After finishing the front it lifted 4"
Then on to the rear sitting at 40" and installing the 1" spacers lift it lifted by 2" go figure to 42"
Here is the vehicle after lifting it. I really like the lifted stance a much better look. The front is now at 41" & Rear at 42"

Re: My evolution of my M998
The 4" of front lift from the new springs is interesting to see. I've had a set of NOS front springs for some time that I haven't installed it, it will be interesting to see if my results are as dramatic as yours when I get around to it.
Out of curiosity, did you measure the distance between bottom edge of each lower control arm front cross member bracket to the floor/ground before and after? The method I'm aware of for proper suspension height (albeit technically for the H1) I found here https://www.flashoffroad.com/Maintenanc ... ings_1.htm
If nothing else, I'd be interested in what your after measurement is for the linked method.

Re: My evolution of my M998
I should take a measurement to compare to the chart but I don't have the start measure to compare. But then again I have many non 86 items all thru this HMMWV.

Re: My evolution of my M998
Its that time to add more modifications. A while ago more like three years ago I purchased the De-Icer control box with harness. This is one of those add on I have placed on the back burner. Lately I've been driving my HMMWV to work and in the mornings the windows are getting foggy so I hope this De-Icer will help.
I wasn't to sure of the wiring so I reached out to the expert "Ted Gates" and he provided me his diagram of the wiring harness. Thanks Ted.
After getting it installed I want sure the sequence of turing it on beyond just switching over the toggle switch so I looked it up here is the procedures.

Re: My evolution of my M998
I'm going to work on my turret motor I just started having problems with it working. I was given a few suggestions to clean out the electrical clutch motor on the back end
this little electric clutch/motor hanging is what I need to take apart.
I mentioned before my system powers up and it does not rotate. The electric motor I can hear it humming and the back where the clutch is located getting warm. I was told that it builds up some corrosion and keeps it from powering. Going to give it a shot.

Re: My evolution of my M998
today I took apart my motor to find there was corrosion on the clutch. It looked pretty ruff
I wasn't sure how to remove it from the motor without cutting the extremely short wires but it had to be done in order to replace it or clean it.
I made the decision to use my spare motor clutch and solder the wires together.
After soldering the wires and reinstalling it the clutch hosing onto the motor and installing motor, guess what? it did the same thing, humming and would not rotate so now I'm going to have to remove this heavy motor again. I tell you the mounting bolts are not easy to get to. I've been using a 3/8 drive 9/16 crow foot but I actually need a 1/4 drive 9/16 crow foot to have the room to break it loose. Deciding to find an easier way to remove the motor I looked how its mounted to the base mount and it looks like it would be much faster just removing the 6ea 7/16 bolts and dropping it from the chain and sprocket.
Now this was really fast getting it down. Now what to do next. I took a guess that maybe the gear selector from changing it from lock to neutral was an issue. So I took it apart at the gear selector and load and behold I heard the gear snap into place. Apparently the selector knob/switch was jamming up not allow the gear to fully drop into place and push down into the free spin/neutral position. So I put all together and just like that it operates as it should.
Just thought to pass along what I leaned playing around and troubleshooting this motor. So now I'm going to clean up my spare and see if I can get a harness for just in case. Does anybody have a harnees on a bad motor they want to sell?

Re: My evolution of my M998
after doing/trying some research on locating a harness for my spare motor it was hard to locate one I figured it would be better off just buying unserviceable motor at a reasonable price with a prefect harness. I found one on eBay for $20 . A motor with good harness. It doesn't come with the mounting plate but I really don't need that mounting plate. When it arrived I took it apart and the electric clutch pack and motor were in perfect condition. I cleaned it up and connected it into my control box power supply and it worked prefect.
So now I have two spares one in perfect condition and another for parts. I also ordered a back up power supply. But this time I'm going to use the version that has the control joy stick plug on the inside. The version I have is the joystick plug with an external secondary plug for the external batteries is located on the top side. Since I don't plan on adding the back up batteries I would just prefer the joy stick to connect inside. At first I was just thinking of ordering another unserviceable control box and removing the plug and installing it into my box. I found one with the plug on the inside. I really didn't know of this version but this is what I prefer just having the joystick inside. Lets see when it arrive if it works.
I was told it does lets see when it comes in.

Re: My evolution of my M998
I made a license plate bracket that can be stepped on and not break the light. This was a problem I have had several times. I got tired of replacing my bulb or fixture. I cut some flat stock and angle stock then cut the angle to match the tire bracket.
It mounts directly into the bolt holes for the bumper support bracket.
Most license plate brackets are to weak or made out of plastic and get bent when driving through brush or mudding. This will hold its shape and position. This will also allow a wider step if needed when climbing up the back end. Thought to share.

Re: My evolution of my M998
Well I got bored and tried of waiting to see if I ever find one of these hatches . In fact I got ripped off by someone using a fake name and zelle account took my money and never delivered. Lost out on that. Then I tired using a different version hatch but I didn't like the fit. So hell, I just decided to make one. Again the point is to shift my protection shield back to keep my ammo can from hitting. So in order to move it back I had to switch hatches from opening from the side to opening from the rear. It turned out pretty good. I will be posting some pictures when I get time to upload them

Re: My evolution of my M998
here is my fabricated hatch.
Flat stock
made a template out of wood
I wish I had a C&E machine.
Getting ready to cut the bi-fold. I'm also using the original bi-fold hinge and seal.
Next step is to align my turret shield and brackets.

Re: My evolution of my M998
Took me some time to get some flat stock to make my mounting plate. The base plate used to be 1/8 but I decided to go with 3/16 because of having to move the shield further back so I didn't want any flexing.
Its not a perfect fit but dam it close enough. So basically fully electric turret on an 86 HMMWV. Again the purpose was to move my shield further back because of the ammo can hitting so problem solved. All that's left some final cleaning and paint.
