My evolution of my M998

Post by Hell On Wheels » Thu Apr 30, 2020 8:44 am

I have own a M998 slowly converted to a M0126 Slant Back for over 13 years and attempted several modifications and upgrades. Im not no expert and have an very limited budget so most upgrades and modifications are within a reasonable budget. There are folks here on the G that complete nearly perfect modifications and I can no way come close to having the capabilities to buy the exact part or installing the NOS. I have over 20 years of military experience as a M1 Abrams Tank Mechanic and would always be required to work and live in my HMMWV. So I always wanted to document my various upgrades and changes though the life cycle of owning my HMMWV. So here my process as I can remember it to keeping my HMMWV to Motorpool Standards.

Here is my very first picture when I first purchased my M998 out of Florida in 2007. Pretty good looking rig. I had it line halled to San Antonio from this russian LTL shipper.

Then I decided to install some x-doors and wanted a hard top. I asked a buddy of mine who owned me a favor to attempt to make one out of aluminum which turned out looking good but it turned into a oven down here in Texas.

Then next I had to try various attempts to install A/C units I could find. This worked great when the temperature was below 85 degrees but needed still some improvements. Then I was was able to get save some money to get an actual HMMWV version.

copy new mods here.
side steps to help me get up to the front windows to clean and rear step on the rear bumper. I also extended the roof line. Metal panels for the X-doors. I used bolts rather then the standard screws to mount the panels.

So when I don't have the gun shield mounted and I need to traverse the turret I would have the problem that the hatch had nothing to lean against because I removed the landing plate. SO I made a bracket to hold the hatch with some scrap metal and pins.

I actually also added to J-hooks to each end of the bracket to hold the hatch in place while I lock the pins in.
