Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
Keeping my 12V generator for the time being due to cost and trying to find one that works. I don't know what it was originally from, but it came with the jeep and worked well before the restoration started. Gener-nator was beyond what I wanted to pay for now. But at least there is more knowledge in the subject out there.

Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
???
Worked before but now it does not. ??
All it did was set. ??
Maybe all the gen. needs is to be reenergized. ??
A jumper wire from the regulator Bat. terminal, brushed to the Gen. field terminal a few times. It should make a spark.
This would re-establish the gen. field residual magnetism that may have went away from setting.

Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
It worked before I took it off to start the restoration, so I assume it still works. However it was a non-Willys generator that was jerry rigged into position. After putting it back into the original mounting configuration, I realized it was not going to fit right without some modifications. So I figured I would either buy a proper MB generator, or the Alternator. I tested the Alt. route since a rebuilt gen and alternator were about the same price.
In the end the alternator didn't fit, and after some more thinking, I realized I only had to shorten down the generator pivot bracket, shim up the pulley, and do a little bit of lathe work on the pulley. All fits well now.

Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
As I recall, rear military brackets came in two lengths. Of course the front mount was in the front engine cover.
And CJs used a generator that might be about the same length as what I think you have.
But, you got it, so guess this is just trivia.
Nothing like a happy ending !

Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
Hey all, looking to go the powermaster alternator route. I have a one wire delco remy alternator that is an instant giveaway. Even with the non Jeep pulley on front, the powermaster alt would look way closer to the original generator than the delco. So the big question is... Will it work? I have a GPW hold down bracket and a GPW generator mount bracket with new hardware. Will this alternator fit and be usable?

Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
You referring to the alternator inside a generator housing ??
Don't know of any reason this would not work.
Antique tractor guys use them to get the advantage of an alternator while maintaining the look of a generator.
I have installed a couple for customers myself.
The ones I know about are "one wire" so no connection problems.
Looked and mounted the same as the original generator, although they are designed more like a CJ generator. Smaller than an MB or GPW unit. Might be an issue there.
Belt pulley width might be another issue. These are made to fit different applications that use different width belts so might just be getting one for the right application.
If you have an AC Delco one wire alternator now, you should be able to mount the Power Master. The alternator is a larger diameter and the mount is a lot different in size and shape.
Anyway, if you can get it mounted and belted up it would work. And look more original than an alternator.

Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
Correct, using this particularly. If I paint the front and back bases black carefully, it should resemble the overall generator style. My question is how well it fits with the standard generator brackets and mounting hardware.Wolfman wrote:You referring to the alternator inside a generator housing ??

Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
Do you already have this generator or is this just a file photo ???
Would be nice to be able to set the Gen. in place and size things up.
This unit is the same size as a CJ-2a generator and on the tractors, a bolt in part.
I have a CJ but don't remember how it mounts. I will go look.
MB or GPW generator is longer and may have longer, lower mounting ears.
I am thinking the original lower rear bracket is going to be too long but if you can find a CJ bracket that would solve that problem.
Lower mount holes may be too small on the replacement unit.
The Military lower bolts are in rubber. That may be an issue.
Belt groove alignment may be an issue.
But, if you have an alternator now, this has been dealt with before and I see no reason this generator won't work.
Just might have to be a little creative.
Sure would look more original.

Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
I just drove up to Florence, Oregon yesterday and dropped off these generators and regulators for some of my Dodge WC projects at: https://gener-nator.com/index.htm
The 12 volt genny's weigh like 75lbs, so shipping is problematic in bulk. He's in a little non-descript shop off of HWY 101:
Of course, had to ask him how Jay Leno's doing. Pretty neat shop with a lot of nice parts and pieces. He's also going to rebuild one Dodge WC starter motor for me.
He may not be able to make a Gener-Nator out of the large 12 volt cases. If not, full rebuild as a genny. Be interesting to see how well they work when done. I'm sure pretty good. He really seemed like a perfectionist. I couldn't get any of the shops around here to rebuild a generator and didn't want to go with an alternator due to the appearance.

Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
That photo I posted is the alternator that looks like a generator from powermaster. Don't have one yet. It's about $350+ bucks so wanting to make sure it'll work before I drop the cash. The longer powermaster shown in that photo has a 7.15 inch gap vs the ww2 gen having a 7.25 it something like that. Seems to me that it should work. One of the previous posters in this thread seemed to make it sound like it would work. I private messaged him a few weeks ago but I haven't got a response.Wolfman wrote:Do you already have this generator or is this just a file photo ???

I'm currently using one of Ron's ford marked fan belts with the Delco alternator and seems to work just fine. The pulley on this powermaster alternator looks to be about the same as the Delco I have.

Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
I looked into gener-nator, but without a core it'll cost me just under $1,000!! Yikes. Not worth it to me as I'm not going for judging with my Jeep. $350ish sounds more reasonable with the powermaster if it works.zepher11 wrote:I just drove up to Florence, Oregon yesterday and dropped off these generators and regulators for some of my Dodge WC projects at: https://gener-nator.com/index.htm

Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
Yeah, that's quite a bit. He said between $350 to $500 each for the genny's. That was before he said he would give me a volume discount, so that's cool. He's going to shoot my my quote next week. I'm just tired of my generators letting me down, and with no one near to rebuild, I figured this is the way to go for me. I report back when I get them back and see how it goes.warbirdphotog wrote: ↑Sat Mar 06, 2021 9:59 amlooked into gener-nator, but without a core it'll cost me just under $1,000!! Yikes. Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
Update:
Went out and looked at my project for me CJ that I have had for a while but not had time to get to.
Had a blown head gasket when I got it. I fixed that and got it running but so far just fixed up enough to drive around the farm.
Self employed Mechanic's life. My stuff is always at the end of the line.
I am retired now. May be hope. Maybe !
Anyway, late 46/early 47 CJ-2A.
Has a Military engine with a Military front engine plate made for the rubber mounted generator, but has a post war 12 volt generator. Looks like the one in your picture. Not rubber mounted.
I did not do this. The way it came.
The P.O, A bunch of farmers that formed a " Hunters Club ", made 2 metal plates that bolt to the rubber mount holes in the front engine plate and lower rear bracket. Rubber removed and spacers installed.
The lower rear bracket is the short one.
The manufactured plates go up just far enough and have holes at the top for the generator to mount to. The generator fits perfectly.
The top bracket is a typical one piece part with the long adjusting slot. Not Military.
Sounds cobbled up but who knows how long it has been this way before I got it and now after.
It has been like this for a long time, running around their cabin in the woods in the Michigan U.P. and I have been driving around my farm/private airport for some time.
Works great. Looks great. I didn't even know it was like this until I went to check into it for you.
Farmers. Never cease to amaze me.
Anyway, you may have to get a little creative but it is possible and will work.
I know. Pictures would be great, but I don't even own a cellphone.

Well, I just ordered one of the powermaster generator alternators (the -2 version which has two terminals). I'll report back here in how the installation goes.

Re: Alternator that looks like a generator
It's taking a heck of a lot of work, but I got the powermaster to fit with a nos generator pulley. I had to make a couple modifications to things, which I'll detail in an update on my GPW restoration page this weekend: https://1944gpw.warbirdphotos.us
Still need to get it all painted (thus the painters tape). But this was the first test fit. I also think my belt is a little stretched out, as I had to turn it a little more than I was expecting. But it fits. After I paint it, I'll take it for a test drive.
