Alternator that looks like a generator

Post by Antony » Sat May 05, 2007 11:16 am

Im sure I saw a website that advertises alternators, where the exterior looks the same as an original generator.

So the look is authentic but the performance is of an alternator,

Does anyone know what the website is or where I can get one of these.

Thanking you

Antony

Last time I saw that ad they were only doing the flathead Ford V8 unit and it was VERY expensive.

I see that they are doing more than just the flat head V8 models. Do they now have any models that would fit a 45 MB? Has anyone tried to put one on a jeep?

Let's bring this one back up. Are any of these "drop in" or do you have to modify the mounts?? Oh and are they with or without regulators??

Click on the link above. They are a one wire alternator, meaning all you need to do is hook a wire from the unit to your battery. I run one to the starter where the batt cable ties in. They have pics of several models. Compare to your original and see how easy it would be. Usually the smaller manufacturers ran one of the majors components, so one might be at least very similar.

Has anyone actually tried one of these? I'm looking at their 82051 "GM Long Case" and it looks like it would fit the L134 mount barely (maybe tweek some mounting holes). My main concern would be ensuring the MB fan and pulley could be mounted.

The antique tractor guys were using these.
The picture in your link looks the same.
They are smaller and shorter than the Military generators. More like CJ generators.
Like what you would find on a late 50's or early 60's Chevy pick up truck.
Belt pulley width may be an issue.
Far as I know, they work OK.
Looks like the price has come down.
When they first hit the antique tractor market, they were in the $600 to $700 range.
Amazing. I just had a look at your link and the pop up ads are already trying to sell me one.

The mounting distance on that one was 7.15", just slightly less than the 7.25" of the MB GEG generator. I was able to get a caliper set at 7.15" over the bushings realtively easily.

The gen my engine came with does not fit the engine without cutting and a bit of grinding, so I'm in the market for a new generator that fits (12V system). The Power Gen is on par pricewise with rebuilt generators I've found on ebay.

I've sent an email to their technical department for clarification on shady sizes and whether the proper speed can be obtained with the stock MB pulley.

Recieved the following:

"Shaft od is .670 and shaft length is.990. Believe it’s to short for your pulley by looking at picture. Hope this helps."

So diameter wise it should fit the shaft, whether the shaft is long enough to accept the pulley, I am unsure of at the moment without a pulley in front of me. I could always chuck it up in the lathe and turn down the collar to get the thread exposure necessary. No word on whether the RPM is adequate.

I might pick one up at my local Summit Racing today or tomorrow and test fit a pulley.

The 82051 was to big around to fit the front plate. Oh well.

Hint:
If you do go with a one wire alt./Gen, connect the 1 Batt. wire from the alt/gen to the battery connection on the regulator with the battery wire from the amp gauge.
This will connect the new unit to the system with the same look as the old gen/regulator set up and the amp gauge will work same as before.
