MB brake drum change

Post by Jim Thomason » Tue Oct 11, 2022 6:13 am

Has anyone used the later model brake drum that mounts on the outer side of the wheel flange? I think this change was made on the M38 and CJ models. Looks like a simple modification. Would make access to the brakes easier. JimT

This is depressing. Post has been up for a week and had no comments. Has anyone ever thought about this? Jim T

I think you'll find most people in here are more interested in 100% originality rather than serviceability

and as far as I can tell its a fairly simple job.
it might require new wheel studs as part of the process, but im not sure
if you try to fail and succeed, what have you done?

Thank you Mugginsmoo and Adam for your input. I tried the search engine first but 10K + hits was too much to fish through, I must be asking the wrong question. I removed the 'shoulder' on the threaded studs before pressing them out--and was able to reuse them. The M38/CJ2A brake drums fit and match the brake backing plate nicely. I did not drill and tap the Hub for the 3 retainer screws-- I used the flat stamped nuts (retainers) to hold the drum in place until the wheel is installed; as seen on newer cars. Once the job is finished you would have to get down and close to see that it is not stock. Jim T
