I also posted this on steelsoldiers.com.
I've been the caretaker of this '43 MB (DOD 2-18-43) since 1984 and never removed this vacuum bracket beneath the carburetor. It's always ran well, so I never saw the need to remove it. The studs for mounting the carburetor were replaced with 2" studs to accommodate the added height of the vacuum port. I'll add some pictures to see if anyone has any ideas. I've never taken the time to return the carburetor to it's original/early configuration but now I have the time. Thank you for the feedback.

Re: Modified carburetor to provide a vacuum port?
If you were thinking this is an original carb when you pull it off look at the base for the number "407" stamped into the base. I doubt you will find it but instead, you'll see "505" which is a civilian base. The linkage on the throttle gives it away. The plugged vacuum port on the body of the throttle also gives it away. That is not a 539S linkage. I would be interested in relieving you of that vacuum adaptor.

Not trying to pick on you, but your heat riser is in the wrong location, the weighted arm should rest around 5 o'clock direction (about 180 degrees out right now) I'm sure the weight effects your jeeps performance if it's not functioning properly.

No offense taken. I appreciate your "expert analysis" and the recommendations and links. The G503 videos on YouTube are informative and addictive.
Yes, I'm aware it was mounted backwards which is why I posted that picture. Strange though, it starts and runs great in all environments both hot and cold.

I bought one of the new JMP carb cast base assemblies. Very nice, and a good price. My motor's bottom end is much happier now.
