11" Brake Drums: Do you prefer ribbed or not ribbed?

Post by DieFledermaus » Mon Mar 07, 2022 4:03 pm

Hi Gee,
Regarding 11" brake upgrades, do you prefer the ribbed DJ drum style or the smooth style? Just wondering.
Regards,
Mike

Depends on the wheels you have. The ribbed drums will probably have clearance issues with stock wheels. I have done a number of 11" conversions and always used the smooth drums.

Another conversion which is seldom talked about, but is an upgrade to better brakes while retaining a close to original appearance is to simply replace the old Lockheed 9" brakes with the later Bendix designed 9" brakes as used on M38A1 and CJ3 - CJ5. The advantage of these are self actuating brakes with easier adjustment and outboard drums. They work better.
