VACUUM SCREENWIPER MOTORS

Post by Rod Rushton » Thu Sep 03, 2020 3:12 am

Many years ago I used to travel around Nederland and Belgium visiting "Recycling Yards" looking for parts for Dodges and GMC trucks.
My Favourite one was Den Otter's in Dordrecht, from which over a period of time bought quite a lot of "Surplus" parts. Here I came to know the owner and his Manager very well and was always made to feel very welcome, coming to enjoy the freedom of the yard to pick and choose as I wanted. Well, almost with the exception of parts for Jeeps, who were exclusively reserved for his USA customers. I was able to buy a good number of whole vehicles, including a WC53 Carryall - which after checking it over in a snowstorm, filled it with various parts, and drove it back to Devon, a distance of nearly 500 miles. Which was not the first time I had done this.
On one occasion I decided to remove the windscreen wiper motors from 3 or 4 GMC CCKW quite legitimately, just for my own use.Unlike a lot of people, I was always careful to declare everything I selected, and as a result became trusted not to try and pillage parts, something I have always been careful not to do.

Here we come to the real reason for raising the subject:-
I eventually fitted a couple of these wiper motors to my own GPW, which worked fine except they park on the "wrong side". The only downside was having to remember to move them when lowering the screen as they would foul the hood rests.

I have often wondered if the internal mechanisms could be swapped over to correct the side on which they park. Also one has a greater "sweep" or arc , which must have a similar control - but that I can live with, as this one is fitted to the driver's side
I appreciate when they are mounted on a CCKW closed cab they are different to the ones on the open cab - which are the ones I have.
A tip I learned last year after driving 10 hours in the pouring ran, was the suggestion to lubricate them with Brake Fluid, but in deference to my paintwork, I used Silicone Brake Fluid instead, which even after 12 months are both working fine.
In the past I have taken one apart to see how it worked, but deciding this was an area of Magic, have never tried since.

Is there such a thing as a TM for these? or sets of comprehensive instructions for overhaul/repair?
