What is this on my 1945 MB?

Post by TF Coyote » Fri Apr 10, 2020 8:04 am

I am in the process of doing some overhaul on my 1945 MB. There is a device under the voltage regulator and parallel to the generator that I do not know the function of. A hose runs from it, up and along the firewall then down to the intake manifold. The hose is collapsed inside, so I don’t think it was functioning recently.
Can anyone tell me what this is? If it does not have a good use, I will likely remove it entirely. The pictures are not that good.

Is the hose the only thing attached to it?

I think I have figured it out: it is a hydrovac brake booster. Now I need to decide if I should rehab it or remove it.

Hydraulic brake boosters are nice--but expensive to rebuild or replace. You might go to Ebay and lookup item 254140724053 . That will show you a line of units made in Australia that are affordable. Study the units and SHIPPING cost to find what is applicable to your jeep. Hope this is helpful. Happy Easter, Jim T

I see no benefit to having a hydrovac on a jeep. They are on WWII trucks to assist with weight and load braking. Don't see how they will assist a jeep with braking unless Bubba was hauling a loaded trailer all the time.

They help with braking effort, might be important if you have some disability.

If you remove it, you can try to sell it here on the "G" , someone might have a use for it!

Mine had this too, but my granddad had it removed before he gave it to me. Said would work better that way. So I guess it's your call and preference.
Got a 1943 Willys MB jeep from my granddad.
Love to play military type games, like paintball and strikeball. And when granddad gave me the car, I was over the top. However, I'm new to all that's going on so the car has been underneath an indoor car cover and I'm here to lurk around and get advice on what to do with the car.
