11 Inch Brakes
In the interest of age and safety I'm thinking of going to 11 inch brakes in the front.
I have 16 inch Slat Grill rims.
Herm has a note stating that his kit might not fit stock rims " Because of the large calipers and brackets ", so it doesn't sound like the larger hubs are an issue.
Can someone point me to a kit that has worked for them in the past?
Thanks, Doug

Re: 11 Inch Brakes
Believe one cannot go 11 inch brakes on front axle of MB/GPW for the steering arms will interfere with the 11 inch brake backing plates.

Re: 11 Inch Brakes
Thanks for the reply CJV-35.
Is the MB front end much different from a CJ2A? There are articles about, and kits for sale for, putting 11" drums on a CJ2A and 3A jeeps. I believe these use backing plates from mid-70's CJ5's, and use non finned drums.
Cheers, Doug

Re: 11 Inch Brakes
Just to semi-complete this thread, I got the following reply from Jim Davis @ Willys Jeep Parts.
Note that Jim's kit uses the backing plates from the Willys wagon and truck. It would still be good
to hear from someone that has used the mid 70's CJ5 stuff.

Hello,
Yes it will. Your 16" wheels are no problem as the Willys Wagons, Trucks
and FC-150 and FC-170 all use the 11" brake system with 16" wheels.
You might have to grind some material off of the two steering arms that
attach to the steering knuckles in order for the brake drums to clear at
that spot.
We have sold dozens of the 11" upgrade kits to MB and GPW owners.

They will work. I had a set on my Gpw with no required modifications before I started a restore. I will be posting the entire kit for sale at some point.

Re: 11 Inch Brakes
I just acquired a 42 GPW that has 11" drums installed. I do not know from what year/model, but they fit.
Here are pictures of steering arms on both sides. They just clear the backing plate by about 1/8"-1/4"

Re: 11 Inch Brakes
Hi Carlo,
Thanks for the post. Which rims do you have?
I recently acquired a Willys wagon project. I'm now pondering the idea of upgrading the wagon's 11 inch drum brakes to disk, then hand the 11 inch drum brakes down to the MB. Sort of a 2-for-1 deal.

Re: 11 Inch Brakes
I think they bent the arms, but maybe grinding will work?
I bought 4 and had to return the fronts as they did not fit. I did use a pair for the back. See here.

Re: 11 Inch Brakes
What did you use on the front?
Very dangerous having larger/better brakes on the back v/s the front.

Re: 11 Inch Brakes
That was long ago and far away, John... the MZ-1 was restored back to 9" brakes all around... some 15 years ago.

Re: 11 Inch Brakes
I know this is slightly off topic, but I just pulled the rear tires and am trying to determine what these 11" drums came off of.
Numbers read C10-AA9 or C10 - 4A9 ??
Numbers at bottom read 160 97
Letters read CANADA
If anyone recognizes these, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks!
