I have done the conversion using Suzuki brake parts. What I did for the rear was remove the original brake drums from the hubs and use CJ3b drums that slide straight on. I also fitted the 1 inch front wheel cylinders on the rear with the latter 3b Bendix brake shoe setup. No booster and it stops just fine, does have firm pressure required about the same as standard brakes but stops in a straight line every time which you can’t guarantee with drum brakes. Wheel spacers are illegal here so does create a problem with combat rims but I am running 15” Scout rims so no issue.

Finally got around to this conversion using brackets that I got from Outlier a few years ago. I'm using all new parts. Since i'm an auto parts dealer I got rotors, calipers and pads for one axle from my supplier. Since they wouldn't give me another set without cores I got the other set from Napa.
The Napa rotors fit over the hubs but the anchor bolts are a different size from these calipers from the other suppliers. No issues really except that I had to drill out the holes in the adapter.
One set of rotors won't fit over the hub, the other set does. Supposedly they are both the same :?
I pressed the old studs out and pressed the new Dorman studs in. This was difficult. I think on the next hub i'll drill out and open the holes in the rotor slightly so the Dorman studs go in a bit easier. it was a pita to get them in straight.
Since hardware is necessary I eventually found calipers in a junkyard. Stupidly I lost the anchor bolts. Two trips to Ace hardware and a fruitless trip to another junkyard and I finally got some, different sizes between calipers, as noted.
Cut off the brake line ends at the caliper end so I can get some custom brake lines made.
Tried grinding the caliper but it wasn't enough so I added wheel spacers as noted, and the aftermarket combat rims fit now.

When I decided to fit disc Brakes to my '44 GPW I had a number of mounting plates laser cut, and still have a few left over.

I know this is an old thread, but hopefully, someone still monitors it...

I was to do this conversion a few years ago, then got sidetracked by other parts of Jeep that had to be done first. Also acquired a new frame and running gear. BUT, the rear end is now a Dana 44, not the original that came on a 42 GPW.

So, I tried the new mounting plates I acquired a few years ago, and 4 of the 6 hub bolts line up. Depending on how I orient the mounting plate, any two are out of alignment. This is not really an issue, as I can drill new holes to match.

Therefore, my question is: Has anyone done this on a Dana 44, and if so, what special requirements are there, if any? And does the mounting plate face forward or rearward? Or does it matter?

Thanks for any info in advance....

I know this is late to be posted, but better late than never. Maybe it will be helpful to someone. Studebaker, from at least 1950 used Dana 26 and 44 rear axle units. The factory brakes (Drum type) --though different sizes for different engines were interchangeable to the axles. I have seen new disc brakes assemblies (kits) installed on the Studebaker Dana 44 rear axles, and have put disc brakes on the front of a Studebaker ((ENTIRELY DIFFERENT THAN JEEP) Google the Studebaker Drivers Club web site for more information. I hope you can get helpful ideas from this. Jim T

Okay, I can see this was back in 2014,

But how many people eventually converted their Jeeps brakes ?

I think its a very expensive conversion for very little gain
I live in the UK (US seller websites are no use to me, I cant buy from them)

Buying from the US is too expensive, when you add on the shipping, P&P

I'm in the process of converting my front axle right now, just need to finish up the brake lines. I saw this video that really helps show the difference https://youtu.be/d3ocSpeDr5o.
