pre/post war transfer case interchangability?
I have a post-war transfer case (1-1/8" intermediate shaft) with all internals. I have a WWII transfer case housing (3/4" shaft).
Can I swap all internals, except for the intermediate shaft and it's component?
Thanks for any help.

Re: pre/post war transfer case interchangability?
Hi Sam. I asked that same question a while back. Turns out the later cases with the larger intermediate shafts use different gear ratios. So you must have a matched set of gears, which means you only have one choice for the 3/4" shaft. Check out novakconversions.com they have a ton of info on the d18 transfer cases along with a chart for gear sets. Hope this helps!

Early CJ-2As used the 3/4 shaft with the lower 2.46-1 low range gear ratios. I have a set at home, I'll try to post the gear numbers.

Here's the 2.46-1 t-case gear set I was talking about that was in a 3/4" shaft GPW case. Compare them to the post war gears you have. Maybe they are the same and will fit by using the WW2 t-case intermediate gear bearing?
Gear numbers are:
18-8-10 26 tooth input gear
18-5-6 34 & 21 tooth intermediate gear
253-81? 26 tooth front output gear
18-8-17 39 tooth sliding gear

That's interesting! I never heard of a different gearset for the 3/4 " transfer cases. One thing I did notice about the sliding gear you pictured is that it has all of the lands of the splines. The three Ford marked ones I have all are missing one. Looks like they were made that way. I wonder why?

Good info guys!!! I haven't torn into this xfer box yet. I was just thinking ahead. May do it sooner than later, just so I know what I'm dealing with.
Thanks again for the info.

Supposingly the EARLY CJ-2, 2A, CJ-1 and Willys Tug 6x6 had a 2.43-1 ratio gear set in a 3/4 inch shaft t-case housing.
Maybe this is where these came from?

Re: pre/post war transfer case interchangability?
I used my 1.125 T18 with my T84. I had to drill two holes for the shift rods to fit in (not that critical) and machine a slot for the interlock pin.
You also have to find a way to secure the tab that holds the ends of the rods where they stick out of the case.
You can drill a small hole for a bolt to hold the tab. The recess in the late model TC cases is too big to hold the tab securely.
Here's a link to a post all about it. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=316591&p=1844587#p1844587

Re: pre/post war transfer case interchangability?
Early post-war transfer cases exist that can fit either a T90 or T84 transmission. No machining is needed. I see these cases periodically at swap meets.

Re: pre/post war transfer case interchangability?
In order to achieve a 2.41 gear ratio out of an early Spicer 18, is it better to ream a 3/4" transfer case or machine the interlock slot in a 1.125 case?
I guess that reaming an early case to 1.125 is way more simple, but not sure if it's "beafy" enough to accept a much larger hole.
Any comment?

I think reaming a wartime case to 1.125” would work fine. The jeep police might frown!
