The early M998 HMMV had a disc parking brake that was mounted on the drive shaft.
It was cable operated.
The 7 1/2 ton rought terrain crane also had a disc parking brake on the driveshaft.
It was also cable operated.
Might be possible to modify these if you can get your hands on one.

I used my stock external band brake a lot on the Alaska Highway convoy. I was pulling a trailer too, but that brake still did a great job keeping me put - even after forgetting to disengage it a few times...

You get the stock one set up good and it doesn't do bad at all, I learned. Even on a 4100 mile trip.

Idea was to mock up my spare tcase on the engine stand so it would be easier to work on than in the frame on the floor. Want to ensure the concept works before taking apart the working tcase. Now i just need some time to fab the mounting tabs off the PTO cover. The lever is a simple cable operated affair which should easily work with the handle in the dash.
i'm positive this will have enough clamping power that the jeep won't move easily with hit engaged and is superior to the drum setup. besides if ...i mean when it starts to leak out the back it won't be a useless mess.

Did this project ever reach completion or remain in concept. I would be very interested in putting such a kit together and installing one on my GPW.

Used one of these on a Spicer 18 in a modified rig. Very powerful.
I used a M151 adjustable handle, mounted to the transmission and a Lokar e-brake cable.

When not clamped, the pads are somewhat ‘floppy’; It took some fiddling with welding & grinding shim points to keep things square and minimize any dragging when unclamped. Stiffer springs between the pads might work too.
