Info on PTO needed... (now with pics)

Post by Carsten » Mon Aug 03, 2009 3:24 pm

Hi guys...

I have tried searching the G for info on Power Take Off's, but nothing appeared!
Were PTO's like the Spicer 18W introduced during the WWII, or were they a post-war modification?

I think there was a pto, belt driven generator for radio jeeps during the war. This thread refers to the hole in the floor, PTO feed off rear of transfercase at the plate behind the input gear. Regards Jim http://www.g503.com/forums/search.php?s ... Here are a couple of photos of how the Spicer 18W was set up. The first factory radio jeeps with the PTO/12v generator (MB-NOM-12) were delivered in May of 1943 or so my records say.

Thanks guys,

I have seen the first of your pictures before, Mark - but i wasn't sure if it was a post-war thing! Not much official info on this, i guess! It's not mentioned in the SNL (but other field mounted stuff is, like the winch and the air compressor)!
Any idea what a Spicer PTO is worth these days?

I sold my unrestored spare to a friend for $150 some months ago.

There are several Supplements to SNL-G503 that cover the PTO/12v generator. I have one for the MB-MZ-2 dated June 7, 1944.

There is a similar 1947 supplement available for download on the M jeeps site.

You have to become a member... which is only a log in name and password if you want to enjoy those downloads.

It is a cool site. 8)

Carsten,

There is also a Spicer PTO that was used on the rear of the transfercase for a GPA. That PTO had two levers and had both a drive shaft (for the propellor) and a pulley (for the bilge pump). So if you find a PTO that has these characteristics and fits on the rear of a GPW transfercase, it may well be for a GPA.

Donovan.

I have always heard the PTO referred to as Model 18W, but clearly this dataplate says 18H! Not sure what this means, in relation to being of WWII vintage? It's finished in OD, but that doesn't prove anything, of course...

Having searched the internet with focus on post-war jeeps and PTO's, i'm beginning to suspect that this is part of the rear-mounted power take-off used on CJ's! It also makes sense, considering it doesn't have a pulley, like the one on Mark's picture, but a flange instead - propably intended for the driveshaft that goes to the unit on the rear crossmember!

That's what i thought.

I'll check on a friends CJ2a with PTO... he ahs the engine out (incl T90, X-case and PTO) and report it.

Holy thread revival but.....

The T-84 on my '43 MB gave up last year and has recently been rebuilt. In so doing I decided to delete the Spicer 18H PTO until that had been added after the war in order to provide drive to the rear mounted pulley unit which the the then owner used to power a saw bench. The MB retained it's additional hand throttle control that has also been removed, had a hole cut in the transmission hump for the PTO engage / disengage lever and also had the rear of the hump modified to resemble the CJ type tunnel and a section of the hat section removed in order to provide clearance for the prop shaft to the rear belt drive pulley. I'm nor contemplating wether to return the rear of the hump to it's original form or just live with it as is as it's part of the vehicle's story.

So now I have the Spicer 18H PTO unit sat in a box, perhaps I should have left that installed too...
