MB/GPW hardtop - anybody seen one like this before?

Post by Mel » Sun Nov 02, 2008 11:59 am

Hi,

Today I picked up an old military hardtop for my MB. It is in fairly good shape.

The guy I got this from told me that it came with a jeep that was imported from Iceland many years ago. The hard top is made of aluminum on steel framework, has brackets for the rifle bracket, lines for vacuum wipers are still there (electrical wipers have been installed later).

Note the strange placement of the shovel bracket :-)

I had to test it on my MB today, and it fit quite well.

Has anybody seen a similar one before or have any information on these? Would be fun to verify the origin of this. It is not very different from the one that is pictured on one of the last MBs produced - unfortunately not identical...

Nice find Atle ! :)

I've never seen one like it before.....I like how it doesn't attach to the jeep window, all one piece...I would think it's a lot more water and air tight that way ?

Just what you needed there in the snow.

Matt,

The best thing was that it was free :-) The guy was about bin it!

Currently it not very watertight, but will be as soon as the rubber has been replaced.

Thanks Tibor,

The difference between the one on your picture and mine is the windscreen.

The one on your picture uses the original windscreen. On mine a windscreen is part of the hardtop.

shovel placement is really really strange. Does it clear winshield wipers and all?

it's close to the one in the photo, note the windshield overhang in the photo, maybe a modification?

Great find, definetly a conversation piece!
