Point taken. First time I see a rope actually on the fender. As per the drawing I have. I was feeling pleased but you do have a point.

I mounted my rope like the drawings shows. For some reason I am unable to upload the pictures. I can send the pictures to someone's email that would be able to post them

The photo above showing the Rope attached to the fender is correct!

Several years ago I posted the images directly from the 1944 blueprint for the Link Belt winch set up. Many thought the Link Belt winch was only for post war vehicles, blueprints show it approved in 1944.

I don't know where the thread is anymore from my original posting about 10 years ago.

Images and measurements showed where to put the footman loops on the fender to stow the Rope.

If you email me offline I will send you close-ups of the blueprint showing the location for the Rope storage. Feel free to repost on here to The Forum, it's difficult to attach pictures to this forum.

I will post them to the g503 Facebook page today.

My email is garyrschultz@gmail.com if you want me to email pictures to you directly.

Worm gear shaft seal replacement? - solved.

Post by Bart1015 » Sat Jun 02, 2018 10:09 am

Does anyone know where to find the "worm gear shaft seal". It looks like the same as the transfer case shaft seal. I do have an extra t-case seal but I don't want to dig out the old worm gear shaft seal to find out it is different.

******* UPDATE ********

The seal is the same as the T-case shaft seal. I had to pick the old seal out as the shaft is not removable. Then slid the new seal on and tapped it in place using a pvc pipe and hammer.

Help ! I finally put my winch on today. Really not an easy feat. Lining up the mix of NOS and repro parts was a real pain.
Anyway it runs. But. We had everything lined up and engaged. Start engine. Everything turns fine. The splined shaft got very hot. Too hot to touch.
I have greased as well as possible in the crowded space down there. Is this normal ? And the engine turns fine without the winch engaged.
So here's the thing. Do I have to crawl under the jeep and re-align the shaft hub everytime I want to engage the winch ?
There is no mention of this in the manual or maybe I have missed a detail. Because this is not convenient.
Seems that engaging the winch with the engine running is a no.

Hello David,

the splined shaft should not get very hot!

Are you sure you installed the arrangement of poppet ball, spring and grease zerk correctly?

Befoer installing the shift rail, you put in the spring, then the ball, then the shift rail goes through and then you put on the grease zerk.

You don't have to crawl under the jeep to engage the winch, of course!
Just push the lever...

And of course you can engage the winch with the engine running!

Just don't move the lever slowly. Push it in very quick!

Yes I think it's all put altogether fine.

Ok so I took everything off this morning. The splined shaft wasn't lubricated enough and the main shaft assembly was very stiff to move.
Anyway it's all lubed up now and in place and moving nicely.
However I don't see how you can engage with the engine moving because the hub with the 3 fingers on it won't be lined up with the pulley holes.
There are independant. So I still have to rotate the main shaft to line the hub up as I push the lever in. Once you use the engine without the winch, it can't be lined up again, surely ?

Unless I've totally missed something here.

And then I put a quart of gear oil in (80W). It leaks out of the top of the head on the shaft side. I had put new gasket in around the casing but maybe I'm missing a joint around the shaft there ? I took it apart a year ago and can't remember what the inside is like. Have no diagram to check.

Is it really necessary to fill it to the top with oil ? Considering I'm not going to use it very often at all. Just for show. The worm gear is greased up.
Maybe just fill the bottom half ? Or take it off and pack it with more grease.

And last question - rope length. I bought 100ft (30m) of rope as per the manual. That's a lot of rope. Maybe 60ft (20m) would be enough to ply with.

It sure rotates faster than I though.

Not much magic about switching the winch on.

With the engine running, just push the lever... that's it!
The three fingers will find the next possible combination of holes in the rotating pulley and that's it.

Yes, you have to fill it up with the right amount of oil, otherwise the free wheeling mechanism will seize and get damaged (Don't ask me how I know!)

The gasket of the winch oil pan has alittle loop around the worm gear shaft.

I can send you a pic of a new gasket, so you can see the shape.

Might take 600wt VS 80wt, who has the lube order specs?
I think the steering gear requires 600wt too, but I may be cross memory of a Model T box there.
600wt is almost grease but still moves around, and is called for in things like the WWI Liberty Truck transmission and such. Tractor supply stores might have it or steam engine fitters.

Anyone with a lube order spec for the Capstan?

Well I have some 140W. Could try that. I can't find 600W here.

@EJB - yes I saw the loop on the gasket. And I have a spare but I think there is an oil seal around that little shaft and I don't remember seeing one when I took it apart. Guess it'll have to come off again to check...

And engaging with the motor running - That scares me. I would have though those 3 fingers would have been ripped off. And I don't have a spare one.

I use 90 wt in mine.

Also, yes you can just push the lever in while the engine is running. Your engaging it a idle and it will work fine. '
