I took this little clip at Normandy while pulling a jeep out of the water.
Dave A was there with us, so he's a witness that my winch actually works.

Yep…I was there and wish I was back there!
The fishing in the moat at the D'jarcy farm was a blast. The winch was getting a great workout and it is truly the first time I have seen one used for an actual recovery. It worked fine. Now if I only had a longer version of the setup, connecting and recovery, I would post it on the winch page on my site.

Braden winch gaskets: https://www.vintagejeeps.com/p-1999-cap ... 315-k.aspx
Its been a while since I have been looking at this thread and thought about what good is it if someone doesn't look on occasion.
I then thought of all the things that were covered in the previous pages and don't remember that some things may never have been mentioned. Like… Ron Fitzpatrick and Scott have been working behind the scenes to provide us parts that we all need for the jeep but now he made one that is relevant to the Braden winch. Ron has had gasket sets made up for the winch.
So now you can clean out the pan or change the oil or whatever without fear of pulling the pan off. Gaskets are available.

Holy....
I dug out my roll of gasket paper just yesterday to cut another oilpan gasket for my winch.
I need to pull the oilpan to check the mechanism...
Now I will order a gasket set from Ron instead.
Thanks for te hint, Dave!

Just to say:
I still got a pair of original axle bumper spacers for sale, just in case someone is needing them.

EJB

Hopefully this is okay to link this\say this here, but I have been dealing with "Eagle" at . in the Netherlands. I'm pretty sure he is here on the Gee.
He's got a complete unit he tells for 4K USD - too much for me.
Anyway this is relevant to the thread and it is fresh on my mind. http://cms...nl/ look under special parts or something like that.
I think he also said he has spare parts too, I can't remember 100%.

4000$ - that's about what I paid for my jeep back in 2004. Wish my pay could follow the price of jeep parts !

I hear Europe is much more expensive for parts too. And I wish I could time-travel too.

Well I do time travel everytime I get into my 1944 jeep - but the prices don't seem to be going the same way !Chance wrote:I wish I could time-travel too.

The highest price I have seen being asked for a complete Braden winch is $4500 on EPay. So…???? Who knows where they will end up. It is still the ultimate accessory for the WWII Jeep in my opinion and it seems that with the increased asking prices, someone else is thinking that way as well.
Oh and I don't know if that particular winch sold at that price but still the number was entertained.

Re: Braden Capstan Winch - Spare Parts - Discussion
Hi all
I need a bit of advice before laying out my hard earned cash on winch parts.
I found a Braden J2 navy grey winch head a few years and mounted it on a repro plate. I mounted the plate and head on my MB. Filed off the rivets etc...
Also found the upside-down bell crank and the mounting plate lever but stopped there.
So as everyone I meet is always dissappointed that the winch doesn't work - I see them creeping under the chassis to see how it's fixed up - I've decided to get the rest of the parts together and finally get this thing going.
I know I can get NOS parts from Eagle over here but not cheap. So I'm thinking of basic parts assemblies from Dave Butlers Capstenwinch site which seem to be very good quality repros and complete it with a shaft assembly from Eagle because Dave's shaft assembly's are linkbelt types and will need a small sleeve to fit properly.
I have downloaded the manual from Elwood's site but it's pretty poor on tech drawings although the written explanations are great.
2 questions :
- I don't quite see how the shaft assembly is fixed between the pulley end and the winch. There's a woodfuff key but no set screw to hold it ? Just a push fit ?
- winch end I can see there's a hole on one side - is this for a screw or split pin ? I don't see exactly how this is rigged up.
- The replacement pulley with the holes in it - is just a single pulley ? Not a double one ?
Any advice...

Re: Braden Capstan Winch - Spare Parts - Discussion
Right I'm nearly there on the parts front...
I still have a question on fixing the shaft assembly to the winch.
Pulley end, there is a woodruff key and set screw. Got that.
But winch end, I have only one hole on the shaft yoke and don't see how this will help fix to the winch shaft which has a hole right through it.
I would have thought that the hole on the shaft yoke should go right through to be able to put a split pin through.
And I guess for you yanks, a cotter pin is a split pin ? Because for me, English, it's not the same thing.
So would I have to drill a hole through the shaft yoke to put a split pin through ? I imagine that this is a safety feature that will break if ever the winch is under too much pressure ?
But why isn't it there in the first place ?

Re: Braden Capstan Winch - Spare Parts - Discussion
I was trying to go back to a post it up on this tread back in Nov 2009 where posted images of the Link Belt capstan which showing an approval date of 11/44.
Unfortunately when I go to the topic link posted below in my original posting on this thread it says the topic no longer exists.
http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=146514
Can anyone suggests if the content and blue prints image I posted in the topic link below may still be someone on this forum ?
Thank you
Gary
Original posting below:

Many think that the Link Belt was only developed post war for the CJ, but we have learned that in fact the Link Belt was developed in approx. 11/44 for Army use as a replacement for the weaker Braden winch which was breaking during field use. The Braden has a lighter gear design and the Link Belt was developed as a more robust winch. See the link below:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=146514
I have posted copies of the original WWII Willy's blue prints from 11/44 showing the installation process for the Link Belt winch on both the MB and GPW. Although it was developed late in the War, the Link Belt was in fact developed originally for the WWII Jeeps but later used on the CJ's.
Hope the link is helpful.

Gary
