is this possible? Willys MB/CJ2a

Post by Hemitheus » Thu Oct 11, 2018 10:27 am

Hello all, Brand new to the forum.

I am looking for some veteran advice. I would love to have an MB. but, i wouldnt want to do a proper historical resto like these beauties deserve. I would like to make one my own. SO, in an effort to mot bastardize a beautiful MB, will a repop MB/GPW grille swap into a CJ2a (provided I also put in the flip out headlights?

I have no issue in customizing a CJ, but veterans deserve respect and I cant bring myself to do it.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you Mark,

There are just some things you don't do. Like mess with an MB. or put 26" wheels on... well, anything that isnt a tractor

ANOTHER DETAIL:

Back in the 40's some state safety regulations made the 5" PAR 46 Head Lamp Bulb as used on the MB/GPW (and other Army Trucks) illegal. Willys came up with a fix, Part No. WO-673023 a complete CJ-2A Grill Assy for Bottom Mounted Radiator with the larger PAR 56 7" Sealed Beams.
It was only available thru the Mid 50's before it was cancelled.

tjanks for the heads up. i will check michigan regulations on that one.

I may just say forget the law and run 5s in the hopes that most local boys in blue aren't aware of that regulation anyway.

Got a feelimg that the law has been long overlooked. Back when surplus WWII Jeeps were numerous and roaming the highways the War Time reflective material in the SeeLites and other WWII bulbs did not project much light.

Driving a Jeep at night here will get you dead very quickly from a kid texting and ramming you from behind. It's not what's in front of you that is the problem so don't worry about the headlights. Watch what is coming up from the rear. Maybe other places don't have this problem but here it is epidemic level.

Back in 1962 some Guardsmen were returning to their base in an M-37 around 11PM, two cars with teenagers were drag racing and rammed the M-37 in the rear. S/SGT Anderson was laying down on one of the troop racks, He was killed, the driver and the passenger in the front suffered permanent injury.
As a result of that 1962 accident the Army installed Red Scotch Lite reflective tape on the rear of Trailers, M-151's, and various Cargo Trucks thruout the 60's-70's untill vehicles with large lens tail lites came out.

you could also cut the dash to fit a gpw/mb glovebox

Or just attach a glovebox door to the flat dash. It'll look the part and be an easy project without having to make modifications.

Completely plug and play, but remember, you will have to replace the grill, headlights, headlight brackets, new welting of course and patch the new bulbs into the existing wiring. By the time you're done, you are about $750.00 into it. Then, of course there is the DREADED choice of which way to bolt the headlight brackets to the grill (bolt heads up or down) quite the discussion. Worth searching here on the forum.
