Hello,
Not sure that this subject has already been treated?
Why don't you enable the pdf file upload option in a post, even with the same file size limitation as for the photos?
pdf is a worldwide standard and is a very efficient way of exchanging documents.
I know we can (g)zip, 7z, tar, gz or rar a pdf file but why not upload directly a pdf file?
Thanks.
Yves

Yves I would love to post .PDF's, I think it's a great idea. Other sites do this as well. Information is key and essential to any quality restoration.
None of us are "administrators' to answer the question though.

Re: pdf attachments in posts
I find 'why' questions tedious. I was hoping someone else would jump in and answer this.
Once upon a time , when drive space was limited, we didn't allow any attachments. Even photos. We've gradually evolved and allowed photos.
Much like our vehicles, we don't move fast. Big changes that cost the boss money need to be discussed with him. And since we're volunteers not employees, we shy away from tasks that might increase our workload, Photo attachments are fairly easy to moderate. But I certainly don't have time to review PDF's for content. But I think the biggest reason we don't allow PDF attachments is, no one has ever asked for it, that I know of.
So there's some why's for you.
Maybe a better question is are we willing? can we enable pdf's?
I don't think its a bad idea.As a matter of fact I'll ask some of the moderators and the big kahuna if it's ok. only PDF's though. no word docs excel files etc. we don't need no stinken macros blowing things up.

Re: pdf attachments in posts
So you are really not a fan of the 5 why’s
Sorry!
I asked that question for one main reason:
each time a pdf is included in a post as a link, that’s a candidate for vanishing in the deep space when the link will eventually be broken!
Like the pictures hosted in a third party server.
Other than that, I agree that reviewing pdf docs can be as tedious as « why’s »
What happens when I zip a pdf and include the zip in the post? More tedious...

Why not? If it becomes a problem for some reason, we'll deal with it.
Plus, it's easy to copy text from a pdf and paste it into, say... a wiki

Re: pdf attachments in posts
Not the "why" but the reasons :
After publishing howto's, I've received that type of messages:
I've created a pdf for my last howto "6V Military Vehicles- DIY USB charger for your Smartphone or GPS".
I will attach it in a new post as an archive.
It was a very good exercise to reduce the howto archive file to less than 256kb with the 3 pages pdf with many photos and schematics.

Would you be interested in writing this up as an article (PDF) that could be shared
The other reason is that the pdf format is almost as efficient in terms of storage space usage as .rar or .zip archives formats. Thanks for the pdf, I will store it in a safe place for later
