RANT ON EDITING POSTS

Post by 17thAirborne » Fri Sep 04, 2020 12:53 pm

Without being disrespectful to anyone, I want to voice my EXTREME displeasure about the locking of posts after 120 minutes. I continue to learn things about restorations, and sometimes after several days or weeks, I realize I posted data that is in error, and if followed can result in lost time, money, or damage to somone's MV. It sort of makes it my fault. I don't have time to email a moderator EVERY time I need to update an old post, and I doubt you have the time to unlock and relock my thread. Do you really want to spend that time, or would you even entertain me asking every 3 days, "Hey, can you unlock my post PLEASE?" It has killed the threads with updated spreadsheets on page 1 so you don't have to sift through 300 posts to find ALL of the updates.

OKAY, I can post something as soon as I discover the error, but most people who are "following along" on my thread to see how I'm doing it do not have the time to read through 2 weeks of postafter the topic just "IN CASE" something changed later.

This policy is draconian IMHO and I respectfully request you allow for posts to be opened as a matter of policy unless the person exhibits some bizzare tendency which leads you to believe he is about to delete his posts and take his toys home with him.

We had a saying in the Army when EVERYONE gets punished for the errors of one. "One guy craps his pants and everyone has to wear diapers."

Still, asking respectfully, why can not the ORIGINAL person who posts, why can they not edit their post?

Sure seems like a reasonable request to me.
Just recently I posted the DUKW pubs, and it would be nice when someone finds something different for it to be added into the 1st posting VS stringing things out on multiple posts.
Of course my opinion doesn't count...

Good point. My WC12 thread had 944 posts with several tables and cost analysis on page 1. Essentially you have to keep re-posting the whole table in the newest thread if you want a clean update. You end up having to Wade through too many posts to make sure you have the latest data.

The rules have reduced the utility of the forum. More regulation is rarely a good thing.

The floggings will continue until morale improves.

A simple request: turn the edit made clock back to the way it was.

There are other solutions of which one is to talk with the PhpBB board developers (open source)
One solution would be to monitor the TOPIC activity.
As long as the topic is still active, the posts within the active TOPIC would not be locked.
It's up to the user to reset the activity counter if desired.
After an amount of time of inactivity the TOPIC would definitely be locked.

But I'm still convinced that the real solution is to never lock the posts and to recover from backup the intentionally erased post by crappy guys.
That means extracting the deleted posts from a MySQL backup and restore them in the live DB.
That would show crappy guys who is the boss. Now the boss is the crappy guy...and we are the pigeons

17thAirborne is right: Normally when you post a "How To", a "data table", a "cost breakdown" or whatever, you should make the update in the first post if any error found.
This is what we are doing when publishing a piece of software. The update is always done in the first post.
As an example, that topic in my forum was active during months, and I have updated and cleaned-up several times the first four posts after receiving feedback from other users.

Yves,
Well said. I agree and thanks for backing my comments

Bill,

Can you look into this solution with Ron. I realize its a bit of work for you guys on the extremely rare occasion that someone does the unthinkable. I would be happy to help moderate or whatever to ease the workload. If you guys would PLEASE, please help us loyal posters just a bit!

Thanks

So now we are crappy! Thanks Yves! Much appreciated!

If all any of us had to do was monitor the site that might work.

Listen guys, we have beat this to death.

Easy solution, post any revision or correction in the thread or as I have mentioned so very many times, if a correction post just won't clarify, contact any of the moderators and we will be glad to help.

Bill, I think Ives was referring to the guy who deleted his posts, not you. That is how I read it anyway. I'm sure he'll clarify.

The topic has been beat to death because there are probably many who would like to see open editing back. I never liked being "punished" or having my freedoms removed because of something 1 other person did. TRUST is an essential element within human interaction.

It is not that bad, the price is reasonable, and overall it has brought some stability to a kinder, gentler forum.

Bill,

Would you be able to allow "trusted" G members have their posts unlocked? Or, only lock the posts of recalcitrant members (a very few) and unlock everyone else.

Otherwise I will have to email you Everytime because I can't stand having errors in my posts. I'm not talking about spelling, rather measurements, specifications and procedures that can cause people to follow erroneous procedures.

If you are happy with me emailing you every week or so to allow me to go back and fix my posts, I'll do that instead.
