Can't amend or add to a post???
It appears that we can no longer delete our OWN posts, can't add to or amend them, and can't add pictures.
Is there a REASON for that?
Inquiring minds wish to know...

Re: Can't amend or add to a post???
That new restriction is indeed really a nice gift to the users who want to illustrate the topic with drawings, photos, sketches, schematics and rework the post until it's understandable by most users in the community.
Look at this one : viewtopic.php?p=1786226&sid=008ac6ac946 ... 6#p1786226
I've edited the first post 6 times !
The editing was most of the time due to photos and schematics. I was simply not satisfied by the previous publication.
viewtopic.php?f=36&t=290272
In the future, I will post the technical topics on my own forum.
I will have a total freedom to modify whatever I want.

If you look at this one, I've edited many of my posts at least twice, sometimes 4 times.Last edited by YLG80 on Sun May 19, 2019 4:02 pm, edited 6 times in total.

You have only a few minutes to edit your post, then it's locked.Mark Tombleson wrote: ↑Sun Nov 03, 2019 1:50 amI agree this is an issue as some posts I edit many times as well.

I see no button for deletion or editing after your posts, gentlemen.Mark Tombleson wrote: ↑Sun Nov 03, 2019 1:50 amI agree this is an issue as some posts I edit many times as well.

I see the upside as a lot of information has been lost over the years and not being able to delete or edit older post keeps the continuity of the thread.
I wonder if I can edit really old posts that have no posters after me?
Last thread that I was the last poster on was 10/20/19 and I cannot edit it!

You are right, after a while the post is still locked.Mark Tombleson wrote: ↑Sun Nov 03, 2019 7:21 amI see no button for deletion or editing after your posts, gentlemen.

I doubt that the lost posts in the past were the consequence of user actions.
I'm not sure that we can even remove ourselves from the forum and delete our posts at the same time..
However, when a user was banned, his posts were deleted.
I believe that the sysop has fixed that issue.
If I remember you were only able to delete your lat post.
That was useful in case of a duplicate post (often with my iPad).

Re: Can't amend or add to a post???
FYI
The board is currently set to allow you to edit or delete your posts within 120 minutes of the original posting.
This change was to preserve the integrity of older technical threads.
Unfortunately a former user recently decided to delete all the old posts they ever made. This makes reading old threads a little disconcerting.
My opinion is its childish , petty, and wrong.
I understand this makes it a little harder to post great concise and informative topics. But I think a balance needs to be achieved here.
There should be a limit to what you can delete.
Feel free to give us ideas of what a good balance should be.
Banning a user doesn't remove his posts. as a matter of fact , a user can be completely deleted without losing his posts. It's an option to remove the posts or not.
Generally speaking, in the past , most lost posts where due to a users own actions just before the relationship soured to the point of banning.

I've read the "All members please read" post from Bill. I was not aware of that "Wild Wild West" situation.
I'm sorry to read about that.
The problem with the new restriction is that all users will suffer from the behavior of only a few users.
To me, the restriction to allow the deletion of our posts during 120 minutes only is not a problem.
I thought that this option was already enable in the past.
It gives enough time to delete a double post by accident, which happens sometimes with my iPad.
More problematic is the option to restrict the modifications.
Look at this thread : http://forums.g503.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... ld#p804535
Recently, I was restoring a GPA radiator and I've found that this thread with lots of details and pictures was very useful.
Unfortunately as you can see, the thread is almost useless right now, due to pictures broken links with Photobucket.
Fortunately, I know that this situation happens frequently and I've saved the whole thread with the pictures in my HDD.
Due to that issue, I'm going to test the Open Source "Forum downloader" to preserve the most interesting discussions.
With the current restriction, even Lew, the owner, is unable to make the corrections if he wants to do so.
On top of that, the modification restriction cannot avoid the broken links, which is really annoying when the users are linking to their temporary free cloud space.
In the past, I've been asked by a G503 user to restore a broken link in one of my old posts.
After that I've always tried to link to the most permanent storage service.
(the Ford GPW drawings, for example)
So personally , I would prefer the leave the opportunity to modify the post fully open, together with the 120 minutes deletion restriction.
Perhaps using the flood interval would clam down the users who ant to blank their posts .
Anyway thanks for your hard work to maintain the G503 forum .

Re: Can't amend or add to a post???
Yvez, thank you for your input.
I thought of the option to keep the editing feature and 120 minutes for the delete option as well. The only issue I see with that is the poster could just edit all the content from the post sans a few periods or exclamation marks and click save. This would, in affect, be the same as deleting the post.
Another thought would be for the poster to contact a moderator to edit after the 120 minutes or for deletion.
Thanks again.

Just found out about this. Good to know since like others have said, we sometimes need to update a post.

Re: Can't amend or add to a post???
Chris, since you asked, this new "120 minute rule" boils down to this in my opinion, which is what you asked for.
If a member feels he has been wronged or otherwise put off by the situation on the gee and chooses to delete HIS posts or to edit HIS information or add or remove or replace HIS photos, that seems to me to be a problem for him and his contributions. Maybe a calmer discussion between all would have kept Farrell on board?
Bottom line is....is the upside (preventing any more Farrell Fox type mass deletions of HIS intel) worth the grief that has already been brought up and will continue to cause havoc down the line worth the downside?
PS... wait until the new MVPA GPW Restoration Guide comes out next year.....guys who blithely followed the gee suggestions and then got to the Nationals or at local meets or even around the campfire will go nuts because they followed the gee and nobody COULD update the many, many, many changes and new intel it now contains. It puts the gee in the light of holding on to "bad intel" and no one will dare to use the SEARCH function, their question may have a much different answer NOW than when some well-intentioned GPW guy posted it previously.
Thank you for allowing me to respond to your question.

We've always held on to bad intel. And members have been good about providing new good intel. We've never gone back and deleted old posts just because someone was wrong. Mostly we just sit around and argue about it for a decade or two while calling each other names.Chuck Lutz wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2019 4:22 pmPS... wait until the new MVPA GPW Restoration Guide comes out next year.....guys who blithely followed the gee suggestions and then got to the Nationals or at local meets or even around the campfire will go nuts because they followed the gee and nobody COULD update the many, many, many changes and new intel it now contains.
