Change in forum URL address wreaks havoc!!

Post by retro-roco » Tue Jun 05, 2018 11:08 am

The recent change in website (and more specifically forum) URL addresses has broken every single link (internal, when referencing another thread) and bookmark (external, when pointed at an existing thread or post.

First question - why was thge change made (efficiency, required for some reason, etc) or "just because someone thought the new address would be cool??

Second question - can the site be set up with aliases that allow the old links to still work, or is there someother plan for fixing??

You can manually change the links from g503.com/forum/*URL* to forums.g503.com/*URL* and it should work but yeah, not ideal.

Not ideal?? That is an understatement! I know they can be fixed... I would think that the webmaster would have access to a site wide "find and replace" function, akin to what they do with any reference to "he who shall not be named"....

From your headers it looks like you're using nginx. Can you implement a rewrite rule to change g503.com/forums to forums.g503.com?

FWIW, I agree with Kirk 1000%. We've been talking about it on the Tools forum as well. Over the years, thousands of internal links in hundreds of threads have been made from one thread to another to improve the coherence and cohesiveness of using a forum as a research resource/information base with respect to similar/same topics over the years, logically linking threads. The idea that anyone would have to go back and repair thousands of links in hundreds of threads is simply a non-starter.

Just to be clear, I wasn't suggesting people to go back and manually change their links. I was just saying in the meantime until the administrator figure out a solution, if you need to access a certain link, you can fix the url yourself.

I'd also like to have the email notification issue fixed as well if an administrator stumble upon this thread.

One little oddity I discovered related to this... I have a shortcut pointed at http://www.g503.com/forums. It automatically resolves to http://forums.g503.com/

It may be something as simple as adding a DNS A record?? that forwards to the new URL
