Early CJ2A Cross-member

Post by 46MB2A » Sat Apr 14, 2018 9:13 pm

All,

I need some help with the cross-member that came with my 46 CJ2A. The CJ2A was built on an MB frame but with a T90 transmission. It has the original MB cross-member mounts but as you can see in the pictures there was an extension spot welded to it that lowered were the cross-member mounted plus they added a block on each end to fill the gap. Also look at the mount for the transfer case. Normal cross-members have the transfer case mount almost flush with the the cross-member. As you can see it has an extension making it taller. This makes it mount up to the transfer case.

I was wondering if anyone else has seen this before? I am converting my CJ2A back to an MB but will maintain the T90 transmission. I want to keep the originality of the MB.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kyle

No, that is bubba-fied. Even early Cj2As with the column shift T90 used their own cross member. Not a modified T84 one.

dpcd67,

DO you know where I can get the correct cross member to fit the MB style brackets to the T90? I can only seem to find the late CJ2A cross member that mounts to the frame.

Thanks.

Kyle

Read this link to an earlier discussion to what you are doing.

Good discussion but it's not what I need. The only thing I am looking for is how to get a hold of an early CJ2A cross member. My CJ was built on an MB frame so the brackets were already moved back by Willys. Same with the rear shock mounts. The MB ones were cut off and the CJ ones installed. The left body mounts were also moved from the inside to the out side. I have already moved all that back to the MB position. Since it was built as a CJ it already has the T90. I think at some point the original owner modified a T84 cross member and dropped it the 1". If I have to i will buy a late CJ2A remember but just wanted it to look correct. Hope I didn't confuse you.

Yes, thoroughly confused. I assumed that if you can change everything back to MB configuration, you can figure out the transmission mount.

My thought was people here would help me instead of berate me. My bottom line question was where to get an early CJ2A crossmember. I don't want to modify anything.

Certainly no intent to berate you but I didn't read that that was your question. In your OP you did not say you wanted a new crossmember; you were asking for "any help". I was just trying to help you achieve the goal of getting the T90 in.
I have no idea where to get the part you want.
Sorry for all that.

“And” this is the reason I don’t ask questions anymore. Poor guy, just wanted a simple answer. We can’t all be “Jeep Guru’s”.

Seriously, I has not trying to be harsh to him at all. If someone thinks that, nothing I can say. I was trying to help him. He didn't say he wanted a part, he said he wanted help. Clearly.

You should not have any trouble finding a CJ2-A crossmember. I'm not sure what you mean by your repeated mention of an "early" CJ2-A crossmember, almost all of them used the same one. Only in late 1948, when they changed to the "CJ3A Style" frame in the 2A, did the crossmember change to what I guess you could call a "late CJ2-A crossmember". HTH BW
