How many of you can remember the familiar sounds of the various 6X6 trucks as they roamed the Military Bases of yesteryear? My favorite is the "bark" of the Gold Comet powered M-35 "gasser type"s, but there is nothing like the sound of a 5 Ton "gasser" winding thru its gears. The M-211 is sort of neat, too, especially when you hear one with its Hydramatic out of whack as it jumps from 2nd speed to 4th.
I refer to the sounds of these trucks on military posts as they have strict traffic rules and there is no speed shifting.
Never did find out who the dumbass with the M-35A2 was that used to leave the spring time Lowell Massachusetts show in a grand exit while trying to shift thru all 5 speeds in less than 50 feet. This went on for 4 or 5 tears- I loved it when he would miss a gear.

I personally like the bark of a Continental 22R in the Ward LaFrance M1A1. No speed shifting that truck. It has interested me in the different exhaust note between that truck and the Diamond T969A. The 969 has a coffee can muffler compared to the M1A1 and it is much quiter.

Anyone ever notice that "chugging" noise in a 5 Ton when shifting into reverse? It is made by the air operated Sprag unit.

I could not agree more, driving M35A2 has sounds of it's own. You could say no M35A2 sounds the same. I did some driving in two different M35A2's in my army career on a regular bases. One truck had been rebuilt and the other not, rebuilt 2 1/2 was the worst of the two. All this occurred in 1996 just as the Army was going to the new LMTV 2 1/2 ton truck.
