GPW 3606 "LIBBY"

Post by Fabrizio » Mon Sep 25, 2017 2:17 am

Hi all,
I have had the luck a few weeks ago to buy, in Europe, GPW 3606, and I am planning a full and accurate restauration.
She is rough on some aspects, but fairly complete and has an amazing amount of original parts still on.

She is GPW 3606, dod 3-3-42, assembled in Dearborn.
Original recovered hood number is 2055994 S , and she is nicknamed "LIBBY" above the rear wheels.

Frame is a matching Midland, while the engine is a mid-42 Willys one, and the gearbox is a later "H" Frank Bros made.

A really nice find Fabrizio! Complete with three out of five gauges! They will need restoring and then the hunt for a proper long needle speedo and a paintcan AMPERES gauge and you are good to go.

Fabrizio, are you keeping the name Libby for her ? Mine is called "Aggie", the name suits her, and my previous jeep was called "Kick ass". These names seem to stick. :D

"libby" seems to have been hand painted, on the second OD layer, so not straight out of factory, but given she has a dod of 3/3/43, probably before the end of the war, so I'm definitely keeping it! I Will photograph each marking, do a vectorial file and cut custom stencils to repaint these as close as possible tontheir original appearance and position, including the leans, left/right differencies etc!

Fabrizio, execrllent find.
How could yours be 3606 /3-3-42, mine is 4312 / 3-2-42. Produced in different factories I’m guessing ?
Good luck with restoration

I'm thinking more than possible. I have 5739, DOD 3-17-42 and believe it's Dearborn also.

3606 is, from Tom's experience, from Dearborn.

The different factories can explain most non linear dod-serial relations.

It also looks like a certain number of VEPs did get a delayed delivery.

I have for example the dataplates of GPW 1016, which DOD is 3-6-42. The serial dataplate has the raised edges, while the other two have the flat MB style edge (like the 3 plates of 3606), suggesting that the serial + dod plate might have been fitted or changed several weeks after the build.

I also know of two VEPs in the 3xx range delivered in the first half of March
