Sidedraft to downdraft
Does anyone know of a mod to change an M151 engine from the sidedraft Zenith carb to a downdraft. Is there an intake that will bolt straight up or will I have to fabricate an adapter. I once changed a MG Midget over by using a Datsun B210 intake (ports and spacing matched, just had to modify bolt pattern) and Datsun carb. The progressive 2 barrel made a major difference in performance.

there is no bolt on, you will have to build an adapter. Mr. Recovery on here modified a manifold for a different carb. He will probably chime in when he see's this. Keep in mind that the exhaust manifold is the limiting factor in airflow through these engines.

Did it. Had an adapter made and installed it. Works pretty good....still have to perfect the throttle linkage.

Where you gonna put the air cleaner? Looks like zero clearance to the hood. And that is not a 151, what is that in?

It's a 62 model CJ5 with a M151 drive train (crossbread at the drive shafts). I have the breather cap from a f134 carb and the hood does close over it. I'm working on retrofitting a paper filter into an oil bath canister for an air filter.

Got to work with what you got....LOL
there are several old post in the CJ section about some of the other mods I've done....Nissan brake booster, swing pedals from a Mazda, hydrolic clutch....
When I bought it, the M151 drive train was already in it....I figure I can do what I want without worrying about originality.

Not intending to revive an old thread, but to answer the last posts....
gem1410, I paid a local welder $30 to fab that adapter for me. I told him what I wanted and gave him a carb gasket to make the flanges fit. The only problem I have is icing in the winter. When I first start up the fuel going through will cause ice to accumulate on the outside of the adapter. I'm still thinking on my solution for that. Once warmed up (about 2 minutes) no problems at all.
I'll try to post a few pics of the whole jeep. If this works, the first will be with the complete hardtop. The next will be after i cut it down to a half cab.

BTW, the pics by the woods were taken while on a test drive after installing the half cab. I had forgotten to fill my gas tank and was waiting for the wife to bring fuel.....LOL.
