1942 Ford GPW #67000 - Purchased at Camp Blanding 1946

Post by Austringer » Mon Apr 23, 2018 7:48 pm

Just bought this from a friend of mine who picked it up from the original owner. The orignal owner purchased the jeep in 1946 from Camp Blanding Fla for I believe around $475. It currently has a CJ2 engine in it but comes with the original engine that was in it when purchased. I don't know if the numbers match yet as I have not picked it up. Looking from the pictures etc the following items are correct for the year and there apparently were very little if any MWOs completed to it during its time in the service.

1) no blackout driving light or holes for the bolts
2) Original corrected plate instructions air cleaner
3) Correct horn
4) No trailer connector
5) Still 6v
6) Original muffler
7) Original correct skid plate
8) Original T84 housing with fill/drain plugs on passenger side
9) Lots of other original stuff and the body is not too bad, it's a little rough, but not too bad.

Pictures located in my google photo album:

Let me know your thoughts on what you see that is good and what needs to be corrected. Not going after factory restoration but a very nice one. I'm going to put a locker in the rear of this for some off roading. This shall be no trailer queen.

Hello Jason,

That is a real beauty you have there, a treasure indeed !!
It appears to be in excellent condition, with its original front bumper that can be restored.

Very little rust, clearly taken care of all these years, and kept under cover in a barn or garage.
The sales catalog from the 1946 Camp Blanding Sale , should have your original USA number listed in it by the lot number.
( I don't have it handy at the moment but it should be on g503 in a post.)

I also have here in Florida, a GPW Jeep from Camp Blanding, based on the 1946 Sales Catalog, with the USA number listed in the auction catalog from the sale. The catalog is an excellent historical research document, and if it was a jeep from Camp Blanding,
many great divisions trained there during the war, including the 1st, 29th, 30th, 31st, 36th, 63rd, 66th,43rd, and 79th among them. It may have served with one of these divisions while there !

However,my jeep had not fared as well as yours, it has rust, the engine is missing, the drivers front frame rail is broken.
It can be restored but will need plenty of tlc to get it done. I did rescue it from oblivion though, which I am happy about.

Best of luck with your restoration, it looks great !

Also, if you are replacing your front bumper, as it looks like you put on another one, let me know if you want to sell it,
as I would be interested in your old one to restore ?

Hello Jason, Twinflyer,

Here is a link to the PDF file of that sale in 1946 at Camp Blanding, Florida.
NOTE : This sale also included vehicles located all over Florida from Boca Raton to Eglin AAFB, to Jacksonville, Miami and points in between to and from.

It was originally posted by Maury, many thanks to " Maurywhurt ".

It is a very nice document and history GOLDMINE for some vehicles sold there, with prices, hood numbers, etc
listed with each lot.

They list everything from Closed Cab CCKWS, Cushman Scooters, 1/2, 3/4 T Dodge WC's, Jeeps,
Chevrolets, Staff Cars, Command Cars, Carryalls, Flat Bed Fords, trailers, etc.
Just tons of great info.

Listed with USA numbers and serial numbers.

I would recommend for everyone to print out a copy for their records !!!!

We need to find all the WAA sales catalogs and it would be a better world :D :D :D :D

Best Regards,

Ray

That is awesome, Ray. Thanks for sharing the link! Unfortunately my GPW wasn't on the list, but this is still an incredible source of history for others!

Wonderful looking Jeep, congratulations. And thanks Ray for posting the WAA listing, it is fascinating. Found a GPW just 15 away from mine, so have an excellent reference point for my hood number.

Hello,

That is great ! The catalog has so much interesting historical info and lists many jeeps, and tons of closed cab cckw trucks with their USA numbers, as well.

I believe that the catalog belongs to Austringer, and was originally posted by Maury.

The jeep that I found that is listed in the catalog is Ford GPW 126030 .

Thanks to Austringer and Maury for the great 1946 Sales catalog from Camp Blanding !!!

Best Regards,

Ray

My father did his basic training at Fort Blanding in the late summer/early fall of 1944 before shipping out to Italy in November. I wonder if this jeep was on the base when he was. My brother is currently restoring GPW 240019, which has a DoD in early December of '44, just about the time my father was arriving at the front.

Hello John,

I would have to say that it was highly likely that this jeep
was there durIng your father's training at the camp .
It was a major training facility in north Florida that well used during the
War.
This jeep was sold from that base, just after the war.
It is located in the middle of nowhere so to speak, and was a very large
reservation for Infantry training.
I have known several WW2 Veterans who did basis training there, who
then were aent to the 70th Division, before going to France.
There is a nice museum there that if you visit, bring a shoulder patch
of your father"s unit, and they will put it on display .
At least they were a few years ago, wanting to show didvisions that trained
there. As well as patches from soldiers who did basic there, and what
division they ended up in from there.
Matter of fact I think I will take a trip there soon to see how things are
going at the museum .

Florida has a Tremendous WW2 Military history !!!
Especially with the Army Air Force as well as so many planes left Florida
to head to India, China, Europe and all other points in between.

I will post a great report I found online about Florida's Military contributions
and the vast numbers of bases and troops trained all over Florida from
all branches .

Best Regards,
Ray
