GPW 266565

Post by CharlieGPW » Sun Sep 11, 2016 10:10 am

HI All,

I thought I would start a thread about this Jeep again so that I have control over it, you can see the earlier thread which I also saw, that is how I came to purchase the Jeep albeit rather hastily! I paid to much but its actually a lovely vehicle and the more time I spend with it the more I like it, you never know in a few years it will probably be worth it but really that is incidental.

GPW 266565 - matching numbers engine / data plates / chassis
Body number - 231078
Date: 25//04/45

Can someone confirm where this was built?

Anyway here's a few pics, it does need some TLC a few parts and things like the angle of the screen sorting but it's going to stay pretty much as it is, I think just try and replace the missing bits.

Ooh wow Charlie!

That is a very nice jeep, well done!

Any chance you could take lots more photos of it for us? Detail shots like the one of the you've already done of the horn which clearly shows brackets and the fuel filter are great- its the finer details in the background of these shots which is gold to many restorers, such as the presence of the tooth washer under the air filter mounting bracket! More photos of such, which some might deem 'insignificant' little things, would be wonderful if you can find the time.

Your jeep seems to have alot of information which it could share with the rest of the jeep world. I am sure Nick Peters (a fellow jeeper on here) will be keen on details such as the material still on the tool box lid for the seal!

As long as your happy, the price doesnt matter. It will long be forgotten soon, filled with many memories of the jeep and the fun times it will bring!

Cheers and thanks for sharing,
Ian.

Charlie,it's great to see one like this...a survivor, one way or another...it is my favorite condition to see on the G.IMO,Many of us paid too much...with few regrets,I'd say...
Hope you enjoy yours, very complete and original as I see it.

When you say you paid too much, if it's what you want then the value is irrelevant as you say. It's probably worth it for the enjoyment it will bring so don't worry.

I think you only need to conserve as it is unless you need to do some work to keep it safe on the road.

Very very nice.

You probably already know but it has an early style windshield...

Indeed I do, it's on the list of things to look at as the frame is pretty rough and needs work. But it has been on the Jeep for the last 40 years at least so no rush.

Been asked to post a pic of the tool box lids and the felt...it certainly looks original as there is no paint underneath and what is left has been over painted in the past.

Image

Also one showing the bolt heads, these are used for most fixings on the body, there are very few F marked bolts on the Jeep.

Image

and another just to show the rear floor and the colour blue poking through. On the whole the body is pretty straight.

Hey Charlie
Thanks for the picture of the tool box lid seal. That's exactly what I wanted to see :) Another interesting point is the cut on the edge of the latch bracket. Normally they are strait, that on yours is unusual. Regarding your bracket mounting bolts they look like good old GKN. Likely changed if the jeep was in British service.

Beautiful GPW, Charlie. Could you post a photo of the engine compartment?

Couple more pics for those that have been asking:

Nick, the Amp meter does indeed have a little F

Jim, here's a couple of the engine bay. It needs a good clean and some of the pipes and clamps need repairing but it's not bad considering it hasn't had much love in the last 10 years.

Also one to show that the inside of the oil filler is OD whilst the outside is original grey, I know Matt (AKA Greendot) raised this about his GPW.

Lovely late war jeep Charlie, some lovely original touches there. I am 100% sure that the OD dip stick tube, air horn and crossover tube are original to late war Fords, my crossover tube is f stamped and has virgin OD in it, same for the air horn and the dipstick tube, all original OD with the correct primer underneath it.
What are your plans with it now? How does it drive? Is the steering tight and are all brake drums working?
