First Contract Tub Question

Post by Chuck Lutz » Fri May 11, 2018 2:32 pm

It just came up on another forum....AFAIK, all GPWs used a tapping plate to hold on each of the TOOL BOX LIDS. My GPW-17963 is 2nd Contract and it has the tapping plates....however Mike McConnell has a Feb 26, 1942 GPW and his has individual hex nuts to secure each screw on both tool box lid.

Can those of you who have a First Contract GPW check to see how the lids are attached to the tub? Tapping plates or individual Hex nuts.

Simply post serial number/DOD and how yours are attached.

From the other post:

Frankie's GPW-22192 has tapping plates..

So, either a first contract thing or something that was changed in the first contract after a certain number of GPWs were produced...

Anyone else with a GPW number in the 10 to 15 thousand range find nuts or tapping plates on their tool box lids?

Anyone with a LOWER than 10,000 GPW serial number have nuts to secure the lids instead of a tapping plate?

OK....
Narrowed down to between 5739 (nuts) and 9450 (tapping plate. Anyone with a jeep between those numbers they feel has an ORIGINAL script tub on it able to check theirs? Remember to use a mirror and flashlight to see it rather than feeling in there!

Anyone have a GPW between 6834 and 9450 able to check if they have nuts or a tapping plate? Best to use a mirror and flashlight. I mistook the tapping plate on a '43 GPW one time for nuts and...it kind drove me nuts for awhile.....

Chuck, I could be wrong but I seem to remember something about the tapping plates coming in about the time the rib was added to the tool box lid area. So maybe April 1942?
