Voltage regulator finish question.
I have a GPW, DOD 03-25-42.
My voltage regulator is non-ribbed and it has crinkle finish that is flaking off.
I want to refinish it so I started doing a bit of research on it. I was surprised to see Jeep Draw has it listed as a smooth finish.
I was always under the impression they all had the crinkle finish with only some construction differances between the years.
Does anyone know the cutoff date for the smooth finish? Also, should it be flat, satin or gloss black?
Thanks for any help you could provide.
Brett

Re: Voltage regulator finish question.
Brett and Fabrizio,
From the Final Draft of the GPW Restoration Guide
Early model: Autolite VRY4203A
Start of production thru February 1945.
The covers on early regulators have a short rib starting near the base and extending upward for approximately 3/8”. Early gasket is cork.
Late model: Autolite VRY4203G
Introduced 2/16/1945.
The covers on late regulators have a long rib starting near the base and extending to the top of the cover on all four sides. Late gasket is rubber and these units are called “water-proof”.
Finish: “Crackle” finish, not “Wrinkle”. Various ink inspection stamps on cover in white or yellow.
ID tag: Etched aluminum with red background.
Hardware: Hardware is Cad plate, (S7) Regulator sealed with round lead seal and inspection number.
HTH,
Mike

Re: Voltage regulator finish question.
The question still isnt answered, or im blind, only think I can make out of it is that after 2-45 they are crackle, Is that meaning all the others are smooth?
Jeep draw says on the fords "Very early VRY regulators had a smooth finish" this makes me say only a limited number are smooth.
also on the willys side "Black, Crackle Finish, Hardware plated ID tag: Etched aluminium with red/orange background. (6Volts) " this make s me think they all were crackle."
I have an early slat that is smooth, I just had some 4Y units that are crackle"
so what is the whole scoop?

Re: Voltage regulator finish question.
Brett,
The “Finish” section in Mike’s excerpt should be its own paragraph. This applies to both early and late g503 regulators...with just one caveat...I believe that some pre-war regulators were plain OD. The Feb 1941 dated “Chrysler Corporation” VRY regulator out of my April 1941 WC-4 was not “crackle” finished.
If you look at early Ford factory photos the VRY-4203A regulators are black crackle finished.

Re: Voltage regulator finish question.
Mike....
I would not use a Chrysler product for a different vehicle from what is technically "pre-war" for the USA as a valid comparison. We don't know if they were spec'd that way (OD) on purpose.

Thanks Michael, I did not even think of asking Mike when I saw him at Petaluma.
