VEP GPW fenders

Post by Michael O. » Thu Dec 28, 2017 12:49 pm

Were some VEP GPW fenders not “F” marked? Just removed my driver’s side fender and can confirm it’s an “early” style fender with the GPW style construction but it doesn’t appear to be marked. I guess some sanding is needed as perhaps it’s very faint. It also doesn’t have the typical GPW serrations along the rolled edges? It looks like someone fitted a post factory fender blackout light (holes have been welded closed) but I don’t see any hole for the cable routing on the top nor on the inside of the fender as found on later MB and GPW fenders.

Also, I’ve been noticing (and have always believed that this is correct) that many of my bolts on GPW 2647 are not “F” marked, but they are the Ford style, ie, the Ford style heads. I removed many unmarked Ford bolts from GPW 104111 also.

Very few of the bolts on GPW 1871 were F marked. They are however those slightly rounded head with no markings. The early GTB was the same way.

GPW6008 doesn’t have F script fenders and I believe they are original to this jeep.

I just hope its not a CJ fender. It is of different construction from my Slat Grill fenders though and has the the two bolt holes on skirt where it bolts to the step. Unfortunitely, my other GPW fenders are at the shop so they can be test fitted once the tub is done.

Here is a photo of the driver’s side fender from GPW 2647. Seems to be of Ford construction. No “F” on top, no serrations along the rolled edges.

Going by memory, the 'F' is usually stamped on the top of the fender in the vicinity of the support channel that runs underneath. I haven't seen one that wasn't stamped fairly deeply, but they made so many that it's possible.

I seem to recall the early cj-2a fenders being different.

Yes, that is where the “F” is usually found. The ones on both of my ‘43 GPW’s fenders are crisp and deep. I know much is still being discovered about the early VEP GPW’s (mine was delivered on 2-26-42...so it was assembled within the first few weeks of production), so I’m curious about other VEP GPW’s with Ford fenders but without the “F” stamp or without the serrations along the rolled edges. I know of one other VEP GPW that has one unmarked Ford fender.

Both fenders are F marked on 3606; and 99% sure original.
I'll look in a few days for the serration marks.

GPW 964 has an "F" stamped right where OldGPW described. And it is quite deep. Like it was stamped with the panel laying on something solid and flat before the hat channel was installed.
A lot better stamping than the serial number on the left frame rail. Took some cleaning to find the ser. number and it was not very deep.

Michael,
Do your fenders have the small reinforcement in the inside corner of the fender? That is a true ford feature.
