Pre August 42 Radiator cap

Post by Ian Fawbert » Sun Nov 26, 2017 4:10 am

Hi all,

Can anyone share with me what type of radiator cap was on a GPW prior to the creation of this Ford Factory drawing? I see that the drawing was started/completed on 8-28-42,

My questions then is, what type of cap was fitted to a GPW before the caps drawn on this factory drawing?

Thanks,
Ian.

Some civilian Ford Trucks of the 40's shared the 4# cap as found on the GPW.

Thanks mate.

Food for thought. I do need to see if the 1st contract manual has anything in it in the way of a parts number- it would be a starting point!

Yes, I remember either Lawrence Nabholtz or Lloyd White stating it was the only GPW part number in the Ford catalogue to continue on postwar. The drawing Ian refers to is last dated 5 Jan 1946.

Ian,
check out the box on bottom left of the drawing, Rev A1 & A3

Then there is the GPW-8100-A2. I would like to know what changes there were to bring it to the A3 Revision?

Interesting topic. I would be nice to know all the change over dates.

I have an original take off F marked cap I removed from a Pe-95.

Mine looks just like the picture of the A2 one however, mine does not have the 3.5-4 lbs or the GPW part number.

I was planning to use it on my 45 GPW. Has anyone else observed the verson I have?

Here is the A version right out of the box....note that the GASKET is not attached to the sealing mechanism of the cap...it is installed in the neck of the radiator. Perhaps the other one had the gasket attached to the cap?

I was searching the forums and found an old thread about radiator caps. Not sure if it answers the OP question but it does contain a little bit more info on the subject.
