So some of the excess post war metal has been removed, the vehicle is fitted with a heater in the front passenger foot well I guess its a post war CJ fitment. By the end of the weekend I hope you have the rest of the excess metal removed and the body sanded down.

A very beautiful early GPW. I wish it was still over here! :( Did you purchase it out of PA recently?

Is it possible to find out where my gpw served by the chassis number?

I would suggest that when you sand it down, be careful that you look on the sides of the hood and the rear panel above the FORD script for any blue drab registration numbers, or unit numbers painted over and under the many coats of paint.

Hi juliansgpw,

While I can not tell where your GPW served ( most of those records where destroyed at the time of demob here in the US ), I should be able to tell where it was built. I would need to see photos of the serial number data plate and the frame serial number stamping.

Tom, will see what I can find. initially we are doing a cosmetic refurbishment as the vehicle is mechanically sound so we can go to some shows in the UK this summer. In August we will begin the body off restoration. Where do i look for the numbers you mentioned on the frame?

Hi Julian,

Another UK 'Script' GPW owner here mate - that looks like a very nice beasty you have there sir!

Whereabouts in the UK are you fella?...I'm in Northants (Nr Kettering) - I'm happy to help you out where I can, with any advice/ knowledge of where to buy spares & bits from etc - send me a PM with your email address or phone number and I'll give you my contact details..I've had five Jeeps now, along with various other WW2 military vehicles and pre-war cars, so feel free to ask away...

There's so much you can learn about your Jeep and all the hundreds of tiny 'differences' between your Jeep and others, just by talking to other owners & by asking questions on this fabulous forum!

Keep in-touch... :)

Regards - Guy.

The frame stamping will be on top of the frame just ahead of the left motor mount bracket or it may be on the outer edge of the motor mount bracket itself.

Hi juliansgpw,

Thanks for the data plate photo.

From my GPW studies and databases, Your GPW 11084 should have come from the Louisville, Ky. assembly plant. The frame stamping should be between the rivets at the edge on the bracket on the motor mount bracket .

Hi Tom,
Just curious, where was the first GPW fabricated? We're the first several thousand made at only one plant?

Tom, the numbers we found on the hood possibly read: 2053784 or 2058784. Its also possible the 5 is a 6, bit it looks most like a five.
Also the cylinder head is different from my friends 44 GPW. was wondering if I have a later head. Will post pics later

Hi juliansgpw,

Most likely your hood number should read 2059784 based on the March 27, '42 DoD.

Hi Phil,

The first production line GPW was built at the Dearborn, Mi. assembly plant. The first about 1500 units ( not serial numbers ) were assembly there before the other branch assembly plants got their lines started.
