GPW 1871 has what looks like yellow. I am assuming it is the green that you are referring to.

You can buy it where they sell aircraft paint. It has been banned at least in my state on anything but aircraft as EPA has no say. Boats and aircraft are exempt from EPA regulations on paint and fall under different government agencies.

Re: What colour was the priming coat on 1st contract GPWs?
Tonight I finally got the tub of 8628 and started to get the carp of the frame. However there are 3 interesting things I found. 1 the frame is primed in gloss back original paint 2 this is covered with a light olive so light in thickness it did not stuck and brushes off this has either red primer over it in some places with of on top. The black is completely bonded and won't scrape off. The frame is a Midland frame with the brake line in Ford fashion through the machine gun mount brace. the vehicle was assembled at Louisville. In March 42. And is in remarkable condition considering its age ND life. The next question I s where has my vehicle been in the last 4 years or more at some time the engine was removed most likely in the last year or 2. The carp I keep finding is bright red sand stone type sand and white yellow sand all down the passenger side on the other the grit is light grey. There are lots of but cases made from the sand and dirt glued together to for cocoons all empty though. Any ideas of the area in the USA ???? ThE has this sort of dirt I know a long shot but interested to know...

I am taking my April '42 GPW to have the tub, fenders and hood blasterd and primed. I will use a color match for Yellow Zinc Phosphase, although not actual ZP paint. This willb e my base coat upon which I will spray my OD when I'm at that point.
When the frame is at that point, I'll do it in Black and a cover coat of YZP and then I'll OD it when I get it to the shop.
Not sure on the axles yet.

I am not aware of any specific date. I need to look at everyone's SN's that posted primer colors to extrapolate based on actual data.

Report from the field, 13551 is approximately DOD of 4-8 April 1942, if we trust this report, and have no reason to doubt it, we know zinc color is good until at least early April 1942.

38679 is about 10-11 June 1942, so we add another data point for use of zinc.

Hopefully a few more folks will see this thread and add their SNs (and DoD) to this thread to improve our confidense in when zink fell out of use with Ford

I have GPW 215, with hints of yellow green on sheep metal items. Will need to check MB frame and see if I can identify color.
Is yellow green primer hard to come by?

Re: What colour was the priming coat on 1st contract GPWs?
I think its simple a matter of matching color shade/hue rather than finding true Zinc Chromate. I am simply selecting a color that closely matches the samples of the yellowish shade. For the body parts I'm going to use flat, closely matching shade that approximates the lightest shade, and then shoot the OD over it. I am debating powder coat to gain the best protection against rust, but that will be based on my blaster's estimate on paint vs powder. I have three GPWs to do (Mar42, Apr42 and Feb43), so I am going to have to consider cost.
I understand you can use paint over powder coat, but not the other way around. If I go with powder, the blaster is going to order a can of the same shade in paint so I can touch up after I finish all my sheet metal work.
For the Frame, I am going with powder coat in black (Midland frame) and then the yellow primer paint color followed by OD: as is descibed in most of the forum threads that I have read. This should provide the closest replication of a Mar/Apr 42 paint job. As for the Feb 43, that will probably be Red Oxide shade under OD.
There is a RAL 1018 (Zinc Yellow) that looks like a nice Match.

I purchased yellow zinc chromate from Aircraft Spruce and had it tinted to match. It’s almost spot on.
