Mark, I have read the article but did not read the sources, would be interesting to go to the National archives and see if his original blueprints do still exist.

John's link also has a link to Cor's jeep article.
http://yankreenactment.nl/jeep/the-hold ... l-details/
Those are some great photos in that Yank article. The Holden article also mirrors what I have been told over the years.
There has to be drawings of this modification somewhere... maybe those NARA sources.

Re: Development of ambulance jeep?
The Yank Reenactment story is based on the research which was done by Frank Steel, on top of that I have found information of the use of the amb. jeep bij the Dutch Marines (RNMC) in 1946. A lot of detailed information concerning the exact way the amb jeep was made is based upon photo research. I will add the info related to Lt. Cmdr. French Moore MC, to the article on the site.

Re: Development of ambulance jeep?
Looks like at least a text version of some of the BUMED documentation is online:
https://archive.org/stream/HistoryOfThe ... 1_djvu.txt
(Battalion Aid Station will be divided three
ways and loaded in landing craft.)
c. Regimental Aid (Infantry) :
(1) Same as Battalion Aid (Infantry).
d. Artillery Regiment: H&S and Artillery
Battalions.
(1) Same as Battalion Aid (Infantry)
less 1 Jeep ambulance and 10 canvas litters.
e. Special and Service Troops:
(1) Same as Battalion Aid (Infantry)
less Jeep ambulance. Twelve folding litters in
place of canvas litters.
f. Collecting Section (Medical Company) :
(1) Same as Battalion Aid (Infantry)
less 1 Jeep ambulance and sick call chest.
Twelve folding litters in place of canvas litters.
...
Further,
the jeep ambulance was loaded with splints,
litters, blankets, extra plasma, and a compact
sick call chest.

Re: Development of ambulance jeep?
That's interesting: "a compact sick call chest", that is probably stored in te special medical box on the passenger side.
Is there anybody who has seen such a chest?

Re: Development of ambulance jeep?
They mention 2 sick call chests here:
https://med-dept.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=911
Unit 11A: CASE, Sick Call
Unit 11B: CASE, Sick Call
I assume (maybe incorrectly) this post is referencing WW2 equipment.
I have not been able to find any info on them.

Re: Development of ambulance jeep?
Thanks Andy!
First mention of the ambulance jeeps appears to be on Saipan.
page 85.
As the battle for Saipan progressed, the
lines of communication became longer and the
need for vehicles increased. Not enough jeep
ambulances had been provided — only one was
available for each medical battalion. When
casualties were heavy, other jeeps were req-
uisitioned, but frequently the requested jeeps
were lost on the way.

Figure 102. — A wounded marine brought to the beach by jeep ambulance from the
fighting front on Iwo Jima. Fifteen minutes later he was on his way to a hospital
ship off the shore of the island.

This site seems to have the pictures (albeit poor quality) to go along with the text:
Here is 102:
... and 74 from an earlier description:
The rest are here:

Re: Development of ambulance jeep?
To all,
Here is a thread that may of some use to all of you who are interested.
http://www.cmohs.org/recipient-detail/2 ... christ.php
Years ago, I had the pleasure of displaying my USMC ambulance jeep at a Marine Corps League gathering on the Oregon Coast. I met with the Mr. Agerholm best buddy at the gathering. This individual told me to look up Harold Agerholm and I did. I wish I could remember the gentleman's name, but alas cannot.
SF,
Frank

Frank, thanks for sharing this story, just imagine how that amb jeeps would have looked after rescuing 45 men under intense fire.
