Gun Mount? Wut de heck is it?
FOund this recently and can not find any info on this on line. Can anyone help ID this. The socket is not the same size as a WW2 pintle socket, but that might just be the grime and rust inside. I should try and clean the socket housing just to verify.

Looks like a tall spittoon to me, or a nice mobile butt can.
Bottom looks like a Banjo CCKW axle flange.

Ahhh yes. The extremely rare experimental T36A3 spittoon can with BUTT modification that mounted inside the M4 Sherman. Should have thought of that.

Re: Gun Mount? Wut de heck is it?
That is the housing for the driveline of the type where the driveline has a ujoint at the rear of the transmission only: the housing is bolted directly to the front of the differential, so no ujoint is necessary there. Henry Ford loved the cost savings of only one ujoint and a straight about 1" bar as the driveline. The cup end worked as part of the oil seal surface around the ujoint.
In the second and third pictures you can easily see where the speedometer drive bolted on, and the boss is where the wishbone radius rods hooked on. These allowed the use of a transverse rear suspension spring, thus saving a second spring, (and more dollars), but at the cost of potential increased body roll.

I never gave it much thought and would never have guessed, see what happens when time goes on? It's been many years since this stuff roamed the roads and is long forgotten. Old MV's knowledge is slowly taking the same direction, it's not just about OD paint and under hood colors, there's much more to it than that Time goes on.

Re: Gun Mount? Wut de heck is it?
Thanks for posting your assessment. I found it in a junkyard that had a few military truck hulks and a rusty overpriced jeep with civvy engine "$5000 loaded on the trailer" My eyes and mind were glued on some sort of military application. I am always glad to learn something.napavalleyartillery wrote: ↑Sun Apr 15, 2018 8:58 pmThat is the housing for the driveline of the type where the driveline has a ujoint at the rear of the transmission only: the housing is bolted directly to the front of the differential, so no ujoint is necessary there. That TM is a nice find, it would be perfect to keep on a shelf beside the TM for Cannon Reports.

As an E-3, I disappeared for a couple hours with the CO's M-38A1 on a search for similar stuff. He was, but was not, amused.

Re: Gun Mount? Wut de heck is it?
My father-in-law told a story when he was an LT in Korea an E-2 came to him looking for a can of track tightener for his motor Sgt. He put the young man to work and after 4 hours or so the Motor Sgt came looking for him, found him working for the LT and got mad as hell. My father-in-law said "If you don't have anything better for the lad to do than go on stupid treasure hunts like that then he can work here" The Sgt was might embarrassed.

Re: Gun Mount? Wut de heck is it?
Sort of a right of passage. THere were many similar events for the LTs when they first arrived at a unit.
