Restoring M3A1 Scout Car SN 256272, ORD 4016

Post by 17thAirborne » Thu Apr 12, 2018 10:59 am

I am happy to report that I have acquired in trade a White M3A1 Scout car, Serial number 256272, Ordnance Number 4016 in trade for another MV. I just wanted to put the first stake in the ground and report that at some point I will begin restoring this MV in a similar manner to the Dodge WC12 that I am working on.

It will be a while, perhaps a year and a half before I actually begin the work, as I have a move to make and a new home to build in TN. In the meanwhile, I'll report on the parts that I am finding and start a cost spread sheet as I did with the Dodge. I have acquired e-copies of the following TMs and printed them out in binders for reference and to begin my edu-mu-cation.

TM 9-705 Operating Instructions for Scout Car, M3A1
TM 9-1706 Hercules JXD Gas Engine for Scout Car
TM 9-1709 Chassis and Body for Scout Car
SNL G-067 ORD 789 Organizational Spare parts and Equipment for Car, Scout, M3A1
Ordnance Field Service Base Shop Data for Car, Scout, M3A1 with Hercules Engine

I have enclosed a few images of the car. It is coming with quite a few parts, repro armor and other items. At some point I will trek to FL and haul it up to TN and place it in storage there until my "restoration facility" is ready for use.

Since the deal was struck I have already acquired the following parts. If anyone sees anything in the images that I need, I'd be happy to fork over a few saw-bucks to build the needed parts pile Here is what I have found so far"

Passenger Air Horn and tube
Complete ignition shielding kit with dizzy cover
2 x troop seats (will build as a radio version. TM 11-2717 on the way)
Near Complete SCR 284 and antenna
Thompson Mounting brackets
Insturment cluster
Speedo
VM
NOS Wiper Motors
Tank Gauge Switch
Coil Shield
Antenna Mount
Radiator cap
Tripod brckets for bumper and rear armor
Driver and Co-driver seat backs
shift know
headlights
Fan adjuster
NOS junction block
Genny, Fuel Pump, carby, water pump rebuild kits
Inner and outer door handles
Windshield armor hold up brackets

My plan is to configure the M3A1 as a radio car with an SCR-248. I have secured the radio, table and mounting parts and have a mast pedestal on the way. The TM does not indicate the seat configuration other than the two troop seats behind the driver and co-driver. It seems since the radio faces aft there would be a single transverse mounted seat in the center pit and perhaps two more one by each of the aft pits. I have two total troop seats at this point. A few SC owners said they prefer fewer seats as most of the folks who ride with them at events prefer to stand and hold on. I was thinking of adding two behind the drivers and one more for the radio for a total of three troop seats.

QUESTION: How many other seats are required, and where are they placed?

The nice thing about the SCR284, according to The May 1942 Directory of Radio Equipment it was used for communication with Tank Destroyer units. I'm continuing to research which units used these in Africa and Sicily and hope to find an appropriate TD unit, if one used these, to mark the bumpers with.

Not much else I can do until I get situated in the new home. BUY PARTS NOW!

I love Parts Arrival Day  I received the coil shield, tripod brackets for the bumper and back panel, sifter knob, radiator cap, 2 x NOS wiper motors and a NOS tank switch.

I'm about 2% of the way there

I just placed an order for a handful of G067 parts with Military Vehicle Supply. Will report upon arrival.

Junction block, generator brush set, steering gear bushing, generator condenser housing, front axle felt seals, inner and outer door handles. carb rebuild kit, fuel pump rebuild kit, master cylinder repair kit, water pump repair kit, panel knob, fuel/oil lines, oil retainer felts, support rods for the armored windscreen, speedo drive shaft and cable. I might not need every one of these parts, but I wanted to secure them while they are still available.

Hey Oz,
I saw on your list of parts needed that you are looking for ignition suppression parts.
I have the distributor cap and sides but don’t have very many of the wire conduit. I do have a complete nos lot 3-4 set. Are you using the small distributor?

Mike,
My post at the top is actually a list of parts that I have already collected. Sorry I was not clear in my communications. I updated the post above. I have a complete ignition suppression harness at this point. I am standing by to see if you friend decided to sell the rather large part we discussed on the phone. 8) I sincerely appreciate your contact and previous and future assistance with getting the needed items collected.

Can anyone tell me if this is the correct length for the scout car antenna? The tube is 15" long.

Hi Ozzie, that's for a halftrack. Scout car is much longer and the mounting flange for the antenna base is a little different. Also iirc on the scout car the tube extends below the floor mounting base slightly.
