Bought a jeep and Been told it a slat.

Post by Peterdodge6volt » Fri Apr 06, 2018 1:11 am

Hi slat jeep members

Bought a MB jeep a few years ago and sitting on top of the Chevy blitz for 2 years under roof.
I been told that the owner said it a slat jeep with half slat parts in it, and was also told it somewhere mid or late 42.
He said it had the matching slat grill engine, gearbox, tranny and chassis and they were all shot rust away with holes everywhere and threw it to scrap and use a later one
He didn't tell me any about the tub but I think it's also a later type replace.
I Dont think he is telling the truth that is a slat jeep but I don't think it is slat jeep.

I manage to get it running and drove it around farm for few months, she run way to strong,
For what I can see on this jeep.
It had no grill on so I put a later MB grill on so I don't hit any tree or sticks on the raidator.
the engine is a replace late war and transfer case not sure on gearbox.

For what I can see early parts on her.
An fat rear drive shaft,
A small box under penssengers wall ( damage )
A very early fuel tank with screw cap square,
GAS gauge, oil gauge fat studs, 30/30 amp gauge,
Not sure about the rear seat if it has no holes,
And a few early spare parts.

I will post the chassis, engine, tub, number soon it's to dark now late evening,
I will post pictures tomorrow or Sunday.
Me and my brother in law have our finger cross if it's a slat jeep if any can identify the pictures,

Cheers Peter

Cant wait for the pictures Peter, the chassis number will tell you all you need to know, but the end of Slat Grill production was late March 1942, the last one being 125808.

Post the frame tag number and we’ll be able to tell you for sure. Also, post the body number found on the driver’s side toe board gusset. That will narrow down the manufacturing date of the tub (unless you have a Ford tub installed). You already said that it’s a jeep salad of parts but we’ll take it one step at a time.

Looking forward to seeing the numbers!

Here the bonnet number but we put the bonnet on from another jeep as it was missing.

Not correct bonnet, the bonnet is late war

The engine will check the number later as I had it on book but I am driving home now from farm
I will post tonight.

Look to be early late war.

Here is pictures of the fuel tank, I believe it's a 1941 fuel tank as I seen a few on slat jeeps in Australia.

Picture of the dash, it has glove box but missin door and tag.
To many holes on dash.
I have the gauges in the box save will take picture of it soon.

But of the rear tub look like late war. I couldn't get to read the tub number as their was bunch of wire and brake bolt on the number, the only 3 words I can see is MB 1????

Peter, judging by your chassis number it is a Slat Grill, there are some issues with it though. Your air filter should be the pancake type, but as you said it is a salad of jeeps. Is your fuel gauge "gas" or Fuel ? What you have posted so far, i would say its a Slattie, and it looks a nice project.

Hi Mark
Thanks for your reply
Yes the jeep is mixed with a lot of late war parts and some GPW parts.
As the owner we bought from use this jeep as parts to restore his other slat jeep, and put late war part in the jeep we bought.
Yes the air cleaner filter is a late war and its not a pancake type as we will have to buy on eBay soon.

The oil gauge is in Spain for restoring gauge and its on his way back home hopefully will receive it this week, and GAS gauge marked GAS the glass is smashed and brought it home today and will work on it, I also have original 7 gauges on its way home from Spain as well, the amp gauge is original auto lite -30.15/15.30+ and its in the dodge right now, as I am still looking for a bad face 60 ampere gauges to put in the dodge and will take the 30 amp gauge for repairs.
The only thing we are not happy is missing the early speedo gauge and temp gauge.

I called my brother in law and he will sent me the engine number tomorrow and will post it,

When we bought it it had missing grill, bonnet, and missing few parts so we put a late war parts on it and when for a fun drive around the farm and had it on few reenactment, but what really break us down is the starter keeps busting, we had change starter about 4 times, we change 3 6v starter and 1 12v starter, the bumper has no hole for crank handle, and the system still 6volt.

I haven't took much pictures as I was so busy getting the big semi truck fill up with ww2 reenactment stuff ready for a biggest show.
What also I found out the tranny is a late war, gearbox don't know.

Can any one please tell me what the slat jeep gearbox and tranny looks like.

Thanks

Hi; the early MB gearbox would have a right hand filler plug; the transfer should (I think) look like a regular MB one; with the small handbrake drum; but with a big hole inside the housing around the shift shafts, instead of two rond holes just around the said shafts.

Hi Fabrizio
Thank you. Is the drain plug and oil fill up plug on the right side ( the 2 plug right side) if I am right.
I have check the spare parts on the shelf and find 1 gearbox case with 2 hole on left side and 1 gearbox case with 2 plug on right side so this means I may have the slat gearbox, will take pictures of the spare gearbox tonight.

Is a way to identify if the axle is a slat jeep.

Thanks

Peter, in my neck of the woods, pancake aircleaners are pretty scarce, so i would start searching as soon as you can. Dont forget the round muffler exhaust, and good luck, you will get there, and dont forget help is available on this site. Keep the pictures coming. :D

Early axles have a lip on the outer edges other than that on the circular pad they are normally stamped with a date. On the right side.
