slat headlight brackets

Post by gpw1944 » Thu Jan 25, 2018 3:06 am

Does any one have a original grill with the headlight mounting bolts intact, I am try to figure if the bolts to mount the headlight bracket come up and are attached with the nut and washer on the top of the grill, I have seen both?
Also I have a original slat grill rear seat and there are no drain holes in the indents for the strengthening of the bottom seat section, yet standard seats have the drain holes? Thanks Nick

Nick, on my slattie, the rear lower seat has one drain hole by the curve on each side, there are no holes on the indents.

The nuts should be facing up. My Jan ‘42 MB also had four TR/20 bolts (two on each arm) in this location.

All the slats I have come across have been bolt head up. Anybody have a larger version of this image?

Thank you guys for your replies, another question for slat owners, the rear panel footman loops for the top canvas do the two loops on each corner have the backing plate? Regards Nick

So the accepted standard is bolt heads up on the headlight arms? Mine must have been switched at some point then.

Makes more sense to have the bolt head on top so as not to interfere with the use of the headlamps to illuminate the engine compartment.

Hi Michael ... I think so. However, on GPWs isn't it the opposite?

Yes, on GPW's the bolt heads face down.

I thought the TR/20's on my Slat Grill's headlight arms were positioned facing down but it's been a while since I removed the so maybe I'm wrong.

Lloyd White's Book on the GPW Jeep has photos on Pages 115, 239, 247 that give a hint of the Head Light hinge bolt orientation, it is contrary to what I thought. There are many other photos from WWII of Jeeps that also give a hint of the hinge being under or over the grill.

After having rebuilt four of these grills myself and removing the headlight hinge remains, I never really paid a whole lot of attention however it was my impression from previous discussions that the bolts were upside down in the Ford and that the early MB ones were right side up.

So I asked Ernie Ongaro to look at his unmolested original 12.31.41 grill to see what position those bolts were in and he provided me with this.

Also is the one I spotted at a friends place in Germany. His was located so that the bolt heads were opposite and the outer one didn't bump the hood. I vaguely remember disassembling an original one that was done that way too. :?
