geared hub bearing race stuck

Post by K_Rambo » Tue Mar 18, 2014 4:23 pm

OK have pulled the geared hub apart and removed the bearings, they are very bad. Now the problem is the top outside bearing race is stuck. I can't get it to move at all. Any suggestions on how to get it out?

Cut it out. Or hit it with a cold chisel.

Weld a good hot bead most of the way around it and it will fall out . Be very careful hitting hardened metal , a piece can fly off and go deep in the flesh or worse a eye , if you must strike hardened metal lay several layers of rags or a layer of canvas around the chisel point . Warren Duchesne

I thought about heating with a torch but I think a hot mig may be easier.

We do this same thing when we rebuild our waterjet pump, they fall right out, great advice.

Tried the weld, twice, no luck. Going to try cutting with a dremel tool. This thing is really stuck.

Got it out. Had to cut a section out then smack it with a small hammer and chisel. Now off to get new bearings.

I hate this part of the hub rebuild. I recently rebuilt all 4 of mine... dremel & chisel method just like you for some of the stuck blind races, and also the stuck big spindle races. PITA. Hoping the fresh bearings / races will last me forever now :)

I know this is an old thread but does anyone know the manufacturer and model of this race puller that was shown? Wanted to see how expensive they are if I can find one. Thanks.

FI:
One thing we learned early on as tradesmen was never hit hard on hard.
We always had an easily dressed MILD STEEL drift in the bottom of our toolbox.
Much better than brass which can chip easily, like a cold chisel or bearing cup, leaving bits where you didn't need them inside the job you're working on or possibly causing bodily injury.

Understand how system parts interact with one another. GOOD parts can then be established & the NOT GOOD problem/s part/s isolated for repair or replacement.
