Good news Alex!
Now, have you got a Tech 1 to use it all?

Why not ?
I do.

BTW, if you watch ebay, you can pick up a Tech1 with a GM Powertrain cartridge for under US$100

I paid $130 for mine....it really depends on what cartridges you need. I bought one with the OBD1 and OBDII adapters because I will be using for other applications. Now to throw all my pieces together. I have an intermittent torque converter on.off sticking problem and am going to get to the bottom of it-but I think it may all be in my brake switch. Its throwing the codes for TC stuck on and off. I also bought a new TC solenoid. Another big thanks for the wiring info for my connectors :D

What diagnostic cartridge is everyone using in their tech1?

OK Guys I'm about to build this for my truck and my scanner has to be told what vehicle I'm working on so what are you guys telling your scanners so that it will pick up the right data stream on the obd1 for the 80E? or should I use an obd 2 connector and that way I won't need the cig lighter plug.

Hi John,

I'm in Germany at the moment, so I'm away from my truck.
What cartridge are you running in in your Tech 1?
I have a 4l
GM power train cartridge for mine, which IIRC doesn't ask for a vehicle, I just tell it that there's a na 6.5 up front.

I can't remember where I get my 12v from just now.

Cheers

I'm not using the tech 1. I'll be using my actron. it's not as fancy but should work. I think I'll wire up an obd 2 plug so I won't need the cig lighter.

I have assembled drawing using a OBD2 connecter. None of my machines will connect to the TCM. What did I do wrong? attached is how I wired my cable.

Hi Alex,

I am quite confident it is correct.
However, you must remember that we are talking about an OBD1 ALDL 16 pin connector NOT a 16 pin OBD2 connector.
The TCM in a Humvee is not OBD2 (EOBD)compliant.

Here's a quick lesson on OBD2:
Image

All ISO/OBD2 compatible cars with have pins in all of these locations with, maybe, the exception of the L Line.
The L Line is used to wake up the ECU but this can be done via the main data line (K Line) on most ECUs.
EOBD communicates via a number of procotcols CAN Bus, ISO, KWP and VPW each one has a different data line in the connector. but power and ground are common to all (4 for Ground 16 for Power).

CAN Protocol Pins
If pins 5, 6, 14 and 16 are populated, the vehicle supports CAN.

Pin # Description
4 Ground
6 Data
14 Data
16 Power

ISO and KWP Protocol Pins
If pins 5, 7, 16 and, optionally, 15 are populated, the vehicle supports ISO or KWP.
Pin # Description
4 Ground
7 Data
15 Data (this pin is optional and may not be present)
16 Power

VPW Protocol Pins
If pins 2, 5 and 16 are populated, the vehicle supports VPW.
Pin # Description
2 Data
4 Ground
16 Power

PWM Protocol Pins
If pins 2, 5, 10 and 16 are populated, the vehicle supports PWM.
Pin # Description
2 Data
4 Ground
10 Data
16 Power
So I would suspect, what you bought was a 16 pin EOBD plug. You will need to change it to the old style pin configuration if you want to use a Tech 1.

I hope this helps

Cheers

upon reading post you mentioned that the OBD2 is not compatible. My question is this, what difference does it make whether its OBD1 or OBD2? It doesn't matter to the scanner. The scanner has a 15-pin cable that you plug your connecters into so if you are working on a CAN you put the CAN connector on the cable and vise versa if its a OBD1 or OBD2.

There has to be a way to wire a TCM J2 connector to OBD2. Snap on and other vendors have done similar cables for HMMWV's.
Attached is some examples. I will pin out my cables on my machines tonight to come up with some theory's.
