M35 Deuce Licensing in Calif

Post by Retired War Horses » Tue Feb 01, 2005 3:31 pm

Anyone know the DMV reason you are "not" required to have a special license for operating a Deuce in Calif?
I was to understand that it was becasue they do not have air brakes but have air assited brakes as one of the reasons.....any info appreciated.
My Deuce is registred as Historical.

Well, the definition of Airbrakes includes air assisted brakes in this state, so that's not a way out.
From CVC 108
"Airbrakes" means a brake system using compressed air either
for actuating the service brakes at the wheels of the vehicle or as a
source of power for controlling or applying service brakes which are
actuated through hydraulic or other intermediate means.
Further, and I'm not sure when this changed, airbrakes are not included as part of the classification of vehicles.
From CVC 12804.9
(2) Class B includes the following:
(A) A single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of more
than 26,000 pounds.
(B) A single vehicle with three or more axles, except any
three-axle vehicle weighing less than 6,000 pounds.
(C) A bus except a trailer bus.
(D) A farm labor vehicle.
(E) A single vehicle with three or more axles or a gross vehicle
weight rating of more than 26,000 pounds towing another vehicle with
a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less.
(F) A house car over 40 feet in length, excluding safety devices
and safety bumpers.
(G) The operation of all vehicles covered under class C.

so since the M35A2 is a three axle vehicle with a gross weight of 12,500 Lbs. you need a Class B Liscence.
But I hear you can get a non-comercial class-B.
