Crossmember tear

Post by USAFpj » Tue Apr 10, 2018 6:53 am

Seems like it's easy enough to mig weld closed, but what kind of force can shear the front cross member of a 3/4T truck? Perhaps this happened when the cross member was first formed? Anyone else see this on their trucks? this crack isn't opened, but the length is approximately an inch, and starts where the cross member ends, and meets the frame rail..

Who knows after all these years; weld it closed and go on with the restoration. Drill a hole in the far end of it first; to prevent stresses spreading.

Yanking the tow cable or chain as they were pulled out of a hole.
I recall a feriend in Kansas tell me of a vehicle he restored where they had apparentlay pulled it between two vehicles, stretching and narrowing the whole frame where nothing fit properly. Probably used two halftracks or it between the vehicle being rescued and the recovery vehicle.
GI's can bend or break anything.
