WC51 fire truck dodge

Post by Peterdodge6volt » Sun Mar 25, 2018 11:12 am

Hi
Here's my WC51 fire truck dodge project. I just painted OD last year to use it for reenactment at our farm.
She is now in a container away from the ran to stop from getting rust, but a least their still no rust when she was sitting outside.
I am going to start working on her in few months, and I already started working on her engine and gearbox, the engine that's inside the dodge is not original.
She will be painted but to original orange paint
It was built in 1945 and used 2 months in UK fire service until war over and it was sent to France fire service

Here she is when I bought it a few days till reenactment, it was already painted in OD. I didn't take photos how she look like before I bought it in Orange, black and white paint.
She runs and managed to get it running again yesterday.
The engine is not original but I have an correct engine and gearbox that I am restoring now.
I will post photos in few hours of the engine and gearbox.
And some other pictures of parts.
I been told her name is Rust bucket

I am so excited to restore both dodges.

Was looking at the gearbox and it was covered full of grease and oil all over it, oowwww awful mess and managed is find few missing parts for the handbrake handle as someone snap two bolts of it and drill a hole on the handle and bolt it on and you can see 3 missing bolts on the handbrake drum yoke, that's not safe luckily I checked it, but slowly now pulling apart for clearing and fix
Lucky I have 2 spare gearbox but both have missing top gears and bearing only bottom gears are their, I am owing to rebuild both and put one in the fire truck project. I will have to start calling her rust bucket as it her original name I been told by the nice guy I bought from.

Here's the gearbox

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data/50 ... ge2419.jpg

Spare gearbox start for her in progress, now stuck on parts to find, I need some gear parts and bearing for both side and bearing the goes inside the top between forth gear shaft and one will to sell one.
I painted it primer Gray and about an hour came back, aaarrrhhh it's blue. I check the paint tin it's says primer Gray but the paint is blue.

Here the engine for rust bucket.
All original except carby and distributor was replaced.
First start in 20 years, I got it running last weekend and 2 days ago.
You can see all my engine collection from front to back container but the White tarp next to the White engine is blocking the view of the rest of the WC dodge engine.
http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data/50 ... ge2421.jpg

2 days ago I did a last run to heat it up up to 200 F on the temp gauge son put on to keep an eye on, and one it hit 200 F I turn it off and start taking all the bolts and studs off the manifold and head with out breaking and studs and bolt, so lucky none of them snaped YESSSS. :D
Took the head off ad looked at the bore and touch my finger on the edge of the bore, YESSSS no marks and worn out bore so lucky as I was told it was last rebuild in 1995 and run on the road for 3 years, in 1998 the owner gave up and left her in th barn left it rust away and the whole vintage car was ready to go to scrape as it was very very badly rusted everywhere on the body, I came over and saved the engine, well saved it for rust bucket and she's happy to have the right engine in it.
Picture of the head and bore

I started stripping the parts out for cleaning and spary painted heat Gray primer and now started working on parts for cleaning

Post more soon of the parts

Looking at the transfer case, its in really good shape and cover in oily grease so I decided to rebuild it later after the engine and gearbox is done.

Looking at the whole front of the dodge the radiator grill holder is a WC52 with a WC51 grill on it and I found out the front chassis has been cut off and converted to a WC51 chassis  that so sad I which it was a WC52, the engine is not original as its a 25 inch long and the whole front was moved 2 inch longer.

Pictures
As you can see on the photo on the bonnet where is sit and close there a 2 inch steel sheet spot weld on the top radiator housing where the bonnet sit when close.
http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data/50 ... ge2424.jpg

And some one made the bracket on the radiator holder without rubber mount.
http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data/50 ... ge2425.jpg

Everything will go back to original soon.

Did some work slowly on the engine, I now have all the parts clean and painted, and putting parts back on slowly.
The bel housing is not the correct one as I just use it to put on the engine frame as I did not have any spare away bellhousing. I have already 2 bellhousing on the way to my place and I will clean it and put the correct bell housing on.

Here's the engine

The rear body tray now removed from the dodge, found out the rear body tray is not original as it was made by a black steel,
Will clean all the mud, rust, and leaves off soon, about an hour later I want to park the dodge inside and when I put on reverse gear and look back as soon as I lift the clutch out  I saw the whole rear axle was about to fell off the springs and going side ways so I quickly park the dodge inside I take a look at the rear axles and found out the springs U mount to axle is very loose.
Will fix it soon. I was so surprised the the rear cab is not rust, as I don't see any rust :D .
Also the fuel tank is not original as its a Mazda fuel tank :?, now I will be stuck looking for correct fuel tank.
No crake on the rear chassis so far, :)

Hi all
I been doing some little work on the manifold trying to get the 2 broken bolts out to separate the 2 manifolds.
I have bought some gauges for rust bucket all original but the 60 ampere gauge long needle is correct for GPA.
I will be restoring them.

Hi
It's been a while been so busy.

I done some little work on the dodge. Managed to get both mudguards off, bonnet, and whole front part of the raidator off.
And did a one last run for 1 and half minutes.

Here the photo of the front of the dodge.

When I removed the radiator U frame off, someone made a bracket 2 inch to mount a radiator U frame and the engine mount was also welded 2 inch on the engine mount to mount a 25 inch flathead engine.

I did some little work on the correct engine for the fire truck dodge.
I am so pleased it's also most done and ready to run soon.
What I am really piss off is I can't get one of the broken studs off the engine for the water pump.
Please note the bellhousing is not the correct one as its just for only to hold the engine on the engine stand. I have the correct bellhousing will go on it when the engine is ready go in the dodge chassis.
Another 2 or 3 weeks we are going to do a engine first test run on the engine stand see how everything goes and see if it will run. I am so looking forward to it.
My sister son little Andrew give a name for the fire truck dodge, he called the dodge him rust bucket
Also the dodge will be 6volt and the alternator on the engine is a 6volt 60 amp not 12volt.

It's been a while since I haven't post pictures a while ago before hospital.

The gearbox is ready to come off the engine

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data/50 ... ge2469.jpg

I have disconnected the yoke shaft and found there is only 2 bolts holing the brake drum yoke shaft, 2 bolt is missing.

http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data/50 ... ge2470.jpg

Gearbox is already home ready for pull apart.
