Post by brian in denver » Thu Mar 08, 2018 9:20 am

Is the right cam in it?

More likely to be the wrong pump. Are you sure it's for a 230? That pump was used on other engines with different cam followers to suit.

?? how can it be the wrong pump since according to vintage there all the same BCDEF ect. up to the 251.

my knee jerk reaction is some cowboy aftermarket hot rod cam shaft. how you gonna tell that whith out tearing the engine down.
is anybody aware of an odball cam shaft ?

I’ve heard of the pivot pin walking out on these aftermarket pumps. Staking them on both sides prevents this from happening.
Just an idea

They definitely make high lift cams for the 230; believe it or not, guys want to race them. Now, as for the fuel pump lobe, I don't know about that. But if they changed the lifter lobes, then who knows what they did with the pump lobe? Anyway, I suspect the cam; a whole series of pumps can't all be bad. But yes, they might have the wrong pump in a 230 box; check the angle of the lever against an original 230 pump. It is easy to see.
Shearing off the arm shaft is pretty dramatic.

weve only used the one standard military hand primer pump. when we got the vehicle the lever was floating around in the bottom of the oil pan, and we fished it out with a magnet. so for temporary fix we threw in a 1/4 inch clevis pin, after about 10 min. it started clacking like crazy, so we pulled it off.and the pin was bent to hell.

I suppose we could measure the lobe push distance. and compare it to our command car. not sure where that would leave us though

Yes, that would help; it would tell you if the cam lobe was the same as your known good one. Mount a dial indicator to the block and watch the needle as you crank the engine over.

figured it out. evidently the M230 is different, the napa guy was able to figure out the right pump.

Well I learned something; looks like the M230 was used in 1959; and I didn't know they were different in any way from earlier 230s.

There are other make engines that have the same lopsided flange pattern as the Chrysler flat heads, Hercules may be another- they use a different configuration rocker arm. Easy make to mistake, if one is not familiar.
